MusicAeterna (Orchestra)

Formed: 2004

Artist's website: https://musicaeterna.org/

The period-instrument ensemble MusicAeterna was founded in Novosibirsk in 2004 by the Greek-Russian concerto Teodor Currentzis; in 2013 they embarked on a trilogy of the Mozart-Da Ponte operas on Sony which won widespread acclaim for its raw energy and imagination – the Don Giovanni (generally regarded as the highlight of the cycle) was described as ‘controversially explosive’ (The Times), ‘idiosyncratic, sometimes startling, always riveting’ (The New York Times), and ‘an invigorating shower of fresh new insights’.

Their discography together also includes The Rite of Spring (‘pulsating yet rhythmically crisp’ – Gramophone), Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony (‘devastatingly powerful’ – BBC Music Magazine), Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, and Purcell’s The Indian Queen (which won an ECHO Klassik Award in 2017).
