Sonya Yoncheva

Sonya Yoncheva (Soprano)

Born: 25th December 1981, Plodiv, Bulgaria

Nationality: Bulgarian

Artist's website: https://sonyayoncheva.com/

Sonya Yoncheva was born in Bulgaria in 1981, studying in her native Plovdiv and later in Geneva; at the beginning of her career she focused on baroque repertoire, participating in William Christie’s Jardin des Voix programme and working regularly with Emmanuelle Haim and Le concert d’Astree (she sings the title-role on their 2012 DVD of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, available on Erato).

From the mid-2010s Yoncheva began to move into heavier repertoire; following an unscheduled Metropolitan Opera debut as Gilda in 2013, she appeared at the house as Violetta, Mimi and Desdemona, Tosca and Luisa Miller, and replaced Anna Netrebko in the title-role of Norma at Covent Garden in 2016 (‘Yoncheva provides a remarkably accomplished traversal of the intimidating title-role, combining poise with a realisation of the tragic scale involved’ – BBC Music Magazine reviewing the DVD and Blu-ray of this production on Opus Arte). Her discography also includes an all-Verdi recital, Paris, mon amour, and a collection of Handel arias (all on Sony), and a cameo as Massenet’s Manon on Jonas Kaufmann’s L’Opéra.
