Aaron Copland

The music of Aaron Copland (1900-1990) is almost every music-lover's introduction to what might be called American 'classical' music. Either through the picture postcard that is El Salón Mexico or the fresh-faced innocence of the ballet Appalachian Spring, Copland is able to capture in sound the wide open spaces, the melodic freshness and rhythmic vitality that, to most European ears, has come to epitomise American music.

Mexican classical or art music of the 20th century has been dominated by expressions of nationalistic feelings. Ponce, a pioneer in this approach used a wide range of folk music in his compositions. The next generation, with Chávez being the most influential, attempted to return to earlier Aztec sources. This music is about assimilating elements from several sources. There are many more later nationalist composers, including quite a few pupils of Chávez’s. For instance Moncayo and Jiménez. Villa-Lobos: Bachianas Brasileiras Nos. 1-9 (complete)

Heitor Villa-Lobos was born in Rio de Janeiro on 5 March, 1887 and died there on 17 November, 1959. He is possibly the best-known classical composer born in South America. He wrote numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. His music was influenced by both Brazilian folk music and by stylistic elements from the European classical tradition, as exemplified by his Bachianas brasileiras ("Brazilian Bach-pieces"), issued here complete. The nine suites that make up the Bachianas brasileiras were composed between 1930 and 1945. The most well-known of these pieces are the famous Ària from No.5 and the Tocata from No.2 (entitled 'The Little Train of Caipira') – a wonderful musical depiction of a locomotive in motion.
