Clavinova Music

Music for Cello and Strings

Sal’s Sax

Robin Michael (cello), Sarah Leonard (soprano), Andrew Sparling (clarinet) & Stephen Gutman (piano)

Fidelio Trio, Ensemble de Ereprijs & BBC Concert Orchestra, Charles Hazlewood

Joe Cutler’s demonstrates his multi-faceted style of composition in this first collection of his works on NMC. His music is influenced by the minimalist music of Louis Andriessen, the driving energy of Igor Stravinsky and his love for complex rhythms and jazz. Joe uses unconventional direction in his score to conjure up the mood he want for his composition. The laid-back melismatic solos in Archie are directed to be played 'grundgily' [sic] and for Sal’s Sax the wild, rhythmic passages are marked as “really pumping” along with a carefully chosen Jack Kerouac quote: 'I like my whiskey wild, I like Saturday night in the sack to be crazy … I like to be gassed by a back alley music’.

“The solo piano piece Buckley's Hot Licks begins with keyboard pyrotechnics, veers into melodrama in its central section with the pianist as reciter, before ending with a homage to Art Tatum-style stride piano, while Sal's Sax is a hard-edged essay in Dutch minimalism driven along on a tide of brass and explosive keyboard and percussion chords. The beautiful Music for Cello and Strings from 2005 seems to me the most impressive work here, referencing a range of 20th-century models, from Schoenberg to Takemitsu, yet remaining confidently itself.” The Guardian, 20th June 2008 ****

Leroy Anderson etched out his own unique place in American music – a composer rigorously trained in the classical tradition whose records topped the pop charts, a meticulous arranger of music whose own melodies were crafted with inventive precision. While he laboured alone over each measure of each piece, the result sounded as if he had pulled one marvellous tune after another out of his hat almost at will. Here, in the first complete cycle of Anderson’s orchestral music, the Anderson family has made available several pieces that the composer did not release, with some first recordings scattered among the familiar and not-so-familiar titles. Volume Two contains most of the little-known works from Anderson’s last decade.
