Shostakovich: Symphony No. 4 in C minor, Op. 43

It took Shostakovich over two years to write his 4th Symphony. Following its first performance, Stalin himself ordered that the composition, which until then had met with enthusiastic acclaim, be condemned in the Pravda newspaper. Roman Kofman and the Beethoven Orchestra of Bonn have recorded this work as Vol. 8 of their complete Shostakovich Symphony Cycle on this MDG SACD. Once again demonstrating the brilliance that we have come to expect from them.

Shostakovich - Symphonies Nos. 3 & 15

The penultimate release of MDG’s highly successful cycle of the symphonies of Shostakovich. In his Symphony No. 3 the twenty-three-year old composer paid homage to May First as an important symbol of the revolution; forty-two years later in his Symphony No.15 he seems to have wanted to recall the carefree years of his youth. As on the previous releases in this splendid series, Roman Kofman conducts the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn.

The Concerto Project, Volume 3

The premiere recording of Glass’s Concerto Grosso is paired with one of his most performed works, the Concerto for Saxophone Quartet, on this third disc in a series documenting all eight concertos that Philip Glass has written to date. Both concertos are played by the musicians who premiered them: the Beethoven Orchester Bonn conducted by Dennis Russell Davies and the internationally renowned Raschèr Saxophone Quartet.
