| | | Recorded in Versailles and Poissy in September 2006 and November 2007
Salomé Haller (Proserpine), Bénédicte Tauran (La Paix), Stéphanie d'Oustrac (Cérès); Hjördis Thébault (La Victoire), Blandine Staskiewicz (Aréthuse, Cyané), Cyril Auvity (Alphée), François-Nicolas Geslot (Mercure), Benoît Arnould (Ascalaphe), Marc Labonnette (Jupiter, Crinise), Pierre-Yves Pruvot (La Discorde) & Joao Fernandes (Pluton) Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet (direction) 2 CDs in slipcase, 132-page booklet. Present as a singer in the chorus of Les Arts Florissants in 1987 when William Christie put on Lully's Atys, [recorded for harmonia mundi] Niquet formed his own ensemble, Le Concert Spirituel that same year. Since that time he has balanced his own endeavours to stage (and record) key French tragédies with his other musical interests. Niquet's latest incursion into French Baroque opera comes with Lully's prologue and five-act Proserpine, joining Destouches' Callirhoé and Marais' Sémélé: a group which Glossa has been releasing in elegant editions over the last three years.Additionally, the recordings have all followed performances of the works, especially at the Opéra de Montpellier where Le Concert Spirituel is currently in residence. Three centuries after the first performance in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel pay tribute to the genius of Lully with a new recording of Proserpine made just after stagings in both Paris and Versailles.Together with a cast of top soloists, well-versed in the demands of French Baroque, singing and with his incomparable Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet once more conjures up a dramatic feast. |

Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet Five years after the initial release of Handel's Water Music and Fireworks suites in the groundbreaking version from Le Concert Spirituel, Glossa are now issuing the original surround master in a newly-designed digipack edition. "Under Niquet's high-adrenalin direction the instruments bray, rasp and swagger to gloriously raucous effect. You will not hear a more elementally exciting Fireworks than this." | | | Recorded at Notre Dame du Liban, Paris, in February 2007
Shannon Mercer (Sémélé), Bénédicte Tauran (Dorine), Jaël Azzaretti (La Grande Prêtresse de Bacchus), Hjördis Thébault (Junon), Anders J. Dahlin (Adraste), Thomas Dolié (Jupiter), Lisandro Abadie (Mercure) & Marc Labonnette (Cadmus) Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet For his latest recording directing Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé
Niquet has revived Sémélé by Marin Marais - the final opera by one of the leading composers from the reign
of Louis XIV. Known for his compositions for viola da gamba, Marais was also the author of a number of
tragédies lyriques which he wrote for the Académie royale de Musique. However, only Alcyone has attracted
any attention. Sémélé, first performed in 1709, has music to charm and seduce: a sparkling prologue honouring
Bacchus, a set of arias with freshly-minted appeal, a marvellously inventive diabolical scene; all leading up to an
earthquake scene that anticipates the later work of Rameau. For all lovers of baroque music, here is the
opportunity to discover and enjoy a masterpiece which has lain in the shadows for the last three centuries. “Niquet’s Concert Spirituel revels in this wonderfully representational music; the cast, headed by Shannon Mercer in the title role, with Thomas Dolié as Jupiter and Anders J Dahlin as Sémélé’s betrothed, Adraste, is always stylish. The noble bass baritone of the youthful Marc Labonette makes an outstanding impression.” Sunday Times, 20th April 2008 **** “Marais conjures up a brilliant succession of choruses, sensuous solos, dramatic ensembles, descriptive symphonies, ceremonial marches and dances. Hervé Niquet directs a tense, visceral performance, highlighting the all-pervasive influence of dance rhythms and the drive of the action. Mercer's Semele seduces and smouldering Jupiter (Thomas Dolié) succumbs. The results are dazzling.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2008 ***** “Niquet's performance with Le Concert Spirituel has real buoyancy and expressive flexibility.” The Guardian BBC Music Magazine
