Plácido Domingo, Nancy Herrera, Mariola Cantarero & José Bros Jesús López Cobos THE STORY: Set in Madrid (Acts 1 & 2) and Extremedura (Act 3) in 1868-69, during a time of unrest in Spain known as the “Revolución Gloriosa”, the plot of this zarzuela is one of love and politics: two men on opposite sides of the political divide (monarchist and liberal – see cover) are enemies in the Revolution and rivals for the hand of the seamstress Luisa Fernanda. THE MUSIC: Wonderfully evocative of Spain, with its characteristic rhythms, melodies and instrumental colours. Moreno Torroba’s melodic gifts are especially striking. There are also reminiscences of Massenet and Gounod, not to mention Puccini’s Tosca! Best known is the Harvesters’ Chorus from Act 3. “This near all-Spanish production is vibrant, passionate and convincing. There is some enchanting music, and the stirring Act I aria is full of pride, passion, sorrow and manly wistfulness. But it is Domingo’s well-sketched Vidal that breaks the heart.” The Times, 21st June 2008 **** |

Plácido Domingo (tenor) Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, Miguel Roa “Whatever the quality of these Spanish coplas and pasodobles, [Domingo's] singing of them is entirely beguiling, effortlessly idiomatic and committed. “You have to feel [them] passionately and sing with spirit, with feeling and conviction,” he writes in the booklet. “The text and the sense of the words are extremely important.”” Sunday Times, 18th May 2008 **** “the ageless Domingo returns to his Madrid roots with the up-and-coming Orquesta de la Comunidad under Miguel Roa in these ethnic ditties that capture an endearing corner of this great tenor's musical personality.” The Observer, 13th April 2008 “The great Domingo goes back to his roots for a Spanish 'soul' sessoin. ” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008 |
