Belcanto - Tenors Of The 78 Era - Part I

Belcanto - Tenors Of The 78 Era - Part I

Enrico Caruso, Beniamino Gigli,Tito Schipa, Léo Slezak, Joseph Schmidt & Richard Tauber

Rediscover some of the most beautiful tenor voices of the 1920-1950s, the golden age of 78 rpm records, in a very rich documentary with video excerpts, archive amterial and interviews. The outstanding tenors of the 78 era are introduced and analysed artistically in thirteen episodes, in a two-volume edition with the first 6 episodes on this DVD. Each episode has a biographical and a musical point of focus. The biographical is illustrated with a scene which conveys the atmosphere of the singer's world and through conversations with family and friends. The musical point originates through conversations with contemporary singers and teachers. Every episode contains numerous musical examples (backed up with footage, much of which is shown here for the very first time) and film cuts as well as the analysis of a representative recording in full length of the artist.

“Nimbus has produced a connoisseur's jewel box with these recordings made between 1906 and 1947. The CD covers the pre-electric days when 'Lucia' was not the only one of Donizetti's tragic operas to be in favour. There is Dame Clara Butt, majestic in 'Lucrezia Borgia', and the great French bass, Marcel Journet, cavernous in 'La Favorite', which also gives us the chance to hear the 30-year old Lauri-Volpi sing 'Spirito gentil' ... Unmissable.” The Times

THE perfect gift for Mothering Sunday – a unique offering that will last much longer than flowers. March 14th is Mothering Sunday. What shall we get for Mum? Well, here is a present that mothers of “Retrospective” age will greatly appreciate: a fragrant bouquet of 26 vintage songs absolutely dripping with sentimentality, all in praise of the lady with the “silver hair and heart of gold.”

Trawling our compilers’ 78 collections has resulted in a huge catch of songs inspired by love for one's mother and, as “This Is My Mother’s Day”, the best 26 can now be presented. Typical is the heartfelt offering of Vera Lynn with the title track. Many of the greatest singing stars present their tributes (everyone has a mother, after all): top tenors John McCormack (Little Mother Of Mine) and Beniamino Gigli (Mamma), Bing Crosby (My Mother's Waltz) and, walking a million miles, Al Jolson (My Mammy - of course).

In all, 20 widely ranging artists are represented, from Brazilian bombshell Carmen Miranda (Mama yo quiero), R&B great Nellie Lutcher (My Mother’s Eyes), through boy singers Bobby Breen (M-O-T-H-E-R) and Joe Petersen (actually a girl!) (A Boy's Best Friend), to “The Street Singer” Arthur Tracy, singing – as are they all – To Mother With Love.

By and large Gigli kept faith with those pieces he most enjoyed singing and that his public adored. ‘It was only through my audiences that this exercise of lungs, diaphragm and vocal cords became transmuted for me into a profound spiritual experience. Like a squirrel counting his hoard of nuts in the winter, I treasure their applause in my memory.’
