Christian Lindberg

Christian Lindberg´s achievements for the trombone can only be compared with those of Paganini for the violin or Liszt for the piano. Having premièred over 300 works for the trombone (including more than 30 composed by Christian himself), recorded over 70 solo CD's, and having an international solo competition created in his name in Valencia, Spain, Christian Lindberg is today nothing less than a living legend.

Pickard - The Flight of Icarus

Pickard - The Flight of Icarus

Pickard:

The Flight of Icarus (1990)

The Spindle of Necessity for trombone, percussion and strings (1998)

Channel Firing (1993)

Christian Lindberg (trombone)

Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Martyn Brabbins

British composer John Pickard has been widely praised for his architectural sense and bold handling of an extended tonal idiom. He is best known for a series of powerful orchestral works, of which The Flight of Icarus has met with particular acclaim. After its première at the PROMS The Times critic wrote: “Pickard's score remains airborne over its 20-minute span rather more proficiently than Icarus, leading the ear and imagination with impressive resourcefulness.”

"A real treat here from a composer I hadn’t heard before, John Pickard. His soundscapes are often rich and not a little threatening, and there is an almost Janá?ekian sense of the inexorability of nature. Had Icarus heard this before venturing too close to the sun, he might have shown more caution." Gramophone Magazine

Requiem for string orchestra

November Steps for biwa, shakuhachi & orchestra

Far Calls, Coming, tar! for violin & orchestra

Gémeaux or Oboe, Trombone, Two Orchestras & Two Conductors

Masashi Honma (oboe), Christian Lindberg (trombone)

Spirit Garden

Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Hiroshi Wakasugi, Ryusuke Numajiri

Because of his great interest in his own cultural and historical background, Takemitsu uses Japanese traditional instruments, for example the shakuhachi, a bamboo flute, which features heavily in ‘November Steps’. Indeed, this poetic music is a real blend of Eastern and Western ingredients, and notable is his use of Western instruments in unusual and unexpected combinations

These recordings have not been available in the West for quite some time and are illuminated by some compelling sleeve notes, written by the composer.

Joe Jack Binglebandit for solo trombone

Akbank Bunka for trumpet and chamber orchestra

Gipsy Kingdom for trombone and string quartet

OF BLOOD SO RED Concerto for chamber orchestra

Text: August Strindberg

Bombay Bay Barracuda for trombone and tape

Christian Lindberg (trombone, conductor & recitation), Richard Tognetti (violin), Neal Peres Da Costa (harpsichord) & Ole Edvard Antonsen (trumpet)

Australian Chamber Orchestra, Nordic Chamber Orchestra & Swedish Chamber Orchestra

This second disc is dedicated to the compositions by Christian Lindberg, who participates as performer and conductor and sometimes both at the same time! Alongside Lindberg the disc features Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra in Asa, a work that sprang from Lindberg’s interest in the religious beliefs of the Vikings. OF BLOOD SO RED for chamber orchestra, is the longest work on the disc, and as Lindberg himself describes it in his liner notes, his most ’serious’ piece he has composed. Other works include a trumpet concerto (with Ole Edvard Antonsen as soloist), two pieces for solo trombone and Gypsy Kingdom for trombone and string quartet, making this a programme as varied in sound and character as are the talents of its creator.

“It is rare to hear a recital devoted entirely to the trombone, and rarer still to hear one of such ingenuity and excellence as that given by Christian Lindberg.” The Times

Concerto for trombone and orchestra ('Motorbike Concerto')

Christian Lindberg (trombone), Charles Vernon (bass trombone), Ole Edvard Antonsen (trumpet) & Håkan Hardenberger (trumpet)

Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Swedish Wind Ensemble & Nordic Chamber Orchestra

BIS’s first-ever DVD is dedicated to one of the label’s most charismatic and longest-standing artists: Christian Lindberg. In celebration of his 50th birthday, BIS presents this DVD which reflects all aspects of his extraordinary career. It forms an extensive – 3h 40 minutes – portrayal of this multi-faceted musician who since his début on disc (on BIS-CD-258) in 1984 almost single-handedly has turned the trombone into a solo instrument. But those who have followed his career, and his discography on BIS, will know that over the past few years Lindberg has also been developing a reputation as a composer and conductor. The DVD includes two hour-long documentaries and the long-awaited re-release of four filmed performances including Jan Sandström’s Motorbike Concerto, which Lindberg performed at the Last Night of the Proms. Lindberg discusses these vintage performances as well as showing footage of him enacting his own Bombay Bay Barracuda for trombone and tape – mostly filmed under water! The final component of this DVD brings together some of the world’s finest brass players, including Håkan Hardenberger and Ole-Edvard Antonsen.

This disc presents a highly varied programme centred on the combination of solo tuba and wind band. It covers a wide spectrum of styles, from the Concerto by Boris Diev (b. 1924) – a leading figure within the great Russian wind orchestra tradition – to Swedish composer Fredrik Högberg’s (b.1971) wisecracking and effect-laden Trolltuba, a re-telling of the folk tale Three Billy Goats Gruff. A highlight on the disc is tubaist/composer Baadsvik’s own piece, the unique Fnugg Blue, a highly enjoyable showcase for pioneering tuba techniques – including percussive effects and multiphonics

Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra

Christian Lindberg (trombone)

São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, John Neschling

A unique opportunity to rediscover Nathaniel Shilkret’s lost trombone concerto - something of a Holy Grail for trombonists, written for Tommy Dorsey at Leopold Stokowski’s request and first performed in 1945. After this performance, the score disappeared, as did the orchestral parts, and it took more than 60 years before the piece was ever performed again in its original form. That performance opens this disc.
