Itzhak Perlman (violin) Red Buttons, Fyvush Finkel, Leopold Kozlowski, Brave Old World, Kapelye, The Klezmatics & The Klezmer Conservatory Band Over the course of a thousand years, the Jews of Eastern Europe forged a unique civilisation in the territorial and cultural expanse between the Baltic and the Black Sea, from eastern Germany to the steppes of the Ukraine and beyond. Its vernacular was Yiddish, a uniquely Jewish fusion of Middle High German with elements of Hebrew/Aramaic, old French, old Italian and the Slavic languages. This Jewish veltele ("world within a world") was home to the majority of world Jewry for much of the past millennium. Born of the confluence of diverse cultural streams and nourished by a wellspring of traditional Judaism, it spiritual, intellectual and expressive sensibilities continue to influence both Jewish life and the world at large to the present day. Among East European Jews, the occupation of the klezmer, or professional folk musician, has been an ongoing profession for centuries. The word derives from the Hebrew kley-zemer - literally "vessel of song" i.e. "musical instruments" and "musicians". Strictly defined, klezmer music is the folk instrumental music of East European Jews, performed at weddings and other family or community celebrations. Comprising dance tunes as well as music for listening at wedding ceremonies and banquets, it is one part of a rich tonality of East European Jewish music that includes liturgical and Hasidic music, folksong traditions, Yiddish theatre music, art music, and popular song. The 2CDs feature Klezmer favourites such as Jewish Wedding Medley, Hasidic Dance and Klezmer Suite, whilst the DVD contains a variety of bonus footage such as "Perlman's first Klezmer lesson", "Klezmer and Mazeltov", "The Polish Klezmer Festival" and "Perlman live in New York". |

| | | Itzhak Perlman - Virtuoso Violinist
This DVD contains three productions from Christopher Nupen’s
famously comprehensive portraits of leading performers: the
portrait film, Itzhak Perlman: Virtuoso Violinist (I know I played
every note) and two memorable performances of Bach partitas
shot live, on stage, at a concert in London where this polyfaceted
artist is at his best.
It also contains two sequences in which Itzhak Perlman looks
back. The first of them, The Trout Remembered looks at the
making of the film The Trout, probably the most frequently
broadcast classical music film in the history of television and one
which has become the lasting emblem of a great age in music.
The second, made especially for this DVD, Jacqueline du Pré
Remembered recalls a friend who was very close for many
years, a colleague with whom he made chamber music in
many places and an artist and personality for whom he has an
unbounded admiration and an enduring affection.
Itzhak Perlman is one of the world’s leading musical
performers, famous all over the world not only as a virtuoso
violinist of the highest rank but as a much loved television
personality, an honoured guest at the White House and an
extremely effective spokesman for the disabled, having been
handicapped himself by polio since the age of 31/2. All of
these things together, plus a famously lighthearted ebullience,
have won him a particularly affectionate following. “Doing what television does best, BBC2’s superb Perlman triptych – two concerts sandwiching an intimate you-are-there documentary – took us as close as it is decent and proper to go into the unexplained world of genius.” – Daily Mail “Perlman is captured on film in the 1970s at a high-point in his career. Perlman is a brilliant communicator, both with words and with the violin, because of the generous warmth of his personality.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008 |

Itzhak Perlman (violin) Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Barenboim "One of Barenboim's most striking traits is the close musical bonds he has forged with some of the world's top soloists. Artists such as Radu Lupu and Itzhak Perlman have popped up again and again on the CSO schedule… They are welcome visitors, since they all but guarantee a remarkable depth of communication between soloists and orchestra.“ Gramophone | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

"To characterize the reading [of the Elgar] I can only say that if Heifetz in his prime had been able to play it not just with his usual power and technical perfection but also with the sweetness and nonchalant flair of Kreisler, then you may get an idea of the assurance of Perlman here, backed by the ever-understanding Barenboim drawing playing from the Chicago orchestra of characteristic refinement. [...] For many it will be a first choice in a long and varied list." Edward Greenfield, Gramophone, June 1982 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
