Liszt: Mayerling

Liszt: Mayerling

Irek Mukhamedov, Viviana Durante, Darcey Bussell & Lesley Collier

The Royal Ballet & The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Barry Wordsworth

The Royal Ballet presents a stellar cast in Kenneth MacMillan's daring and powerful ballet, filmed in 1994, with John Lanchbery's sumptuous scoring of music by Franz Liszt. The dramatic soundscape is matched by MacMillan’s penetrating interpretation of the events surrounding the double suicide of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary and his young mistress, Mary Vetsera, at Mayerling in January 1889. Recorded live at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London on 1st and 5th February 1994

‘Kenneth MacMillan's choreography for this haunting tale is transcendent … stunning set and costume designs … John Lanchbery's truly remarkable score … The Royal Ballet is unbeatably good’ The Times Literary Supplement

DVD (details same as CD)

7 CD + 2 DVD Clamshell box. Not since the death of Maria Callas has the passing of an operatic artist impacted on a world audience as did the death of Luciano Pavarotti on 6 September, 2007, almost 30 years to the day after Callas. Pavarotti was, without doubt, one of the greatest singers of the last century, up there with Caruso and Gigli, to name but two of the most famous whose worldwide reputations were built on their recorded legacy. Similarly, Pavarotti's name will survive into the future as new generations of music-lovers become familiar with his incomparable voice. EMI is privileged to be able to present this commemorative set of their complete Pavarotti recordings, some of which are among his greatest. The set contains Mascagni's lesser-known opera 'L'amico Fritz', recorded by a young Pavarotti in 1968; Verdi's Requiem and 'Don Carlo', the latter being recorded live at La Scala, Milan, in 1992 and included on both CD and DVD.

High Definition provides a phenomenal audio visual experience – not only is the video resolution much higher than standard DVD but the audio capacity is also increased up to a maximum of 7.1 surround-sound channels. The HD DVD format opens the door to many new levels of interactivity, together with ‘picture in picture’ menus. This HD-DVD is not compatible with standard DVD players

‘This production’s slow journey from darkness into the light… works well on the small screen, not least thanks to High Definition camera work and Sue Judd’s inspired direction for television. The real magic, though, is supplied by the onstage cast and intensified by Colin Davis in the pit.’ Classic fM

Nina Stemme

Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Antonio Pappano

Speaking of Nina’s interpretation of the Four Last Songs, Pappano enthuses: “I trust the warmth of Nina's voice. There are a lot of lighter voices that have recorded the piece but you have to remember that Kirsten Flagstad sang the premiere and it's that kind of ample voice with warmth and body - Nina's voice - that I think is too rarely heard in this repertoire.”
