Stefan Zweig, one of the greatest German language writers of the twentieth century, was born in Vienna. In the nineteenth century, the city was the musical, even cultural, capital of the Western world. Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven founded ‘Viennese Classicism’ and later of course Schoenberg, Berg and Webern created a revolution with the second ‘Viennese School’. So it comes as no surprise that music was the first source of inspiration for Stefan Zweig, a literary genius. The first CD of this 3-CD set explores the works of various composer associated with Vienna movements whilst discs 2&3 are devoted to The Silent Women, the Richard Strauss opera with a libretto by Stefan Zweig, in the historic version (1959) with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Karl Böhm. A recording long deleted from the catalogue and here reissued for this special set. |

| | | Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro & Bastien und Bastienne
Mozart: | Le nozze di Figaro, K492 Rita Streich (Susanna), Walter Berry (Figaro), Sena Jurinac (Countess Almaviva), Paul Schöffler (Count Almaviva), Christa Ludwig (Cherubino), Ira Malaniuk (Marcellina), Oskar Czerwenka (Bartolo), Erich Majkut (Basilio), Murray Dickie (Curzio), Karl Dönch (Antonio), Rosl Schwaiger (Barbarina) Wiener Staatsopernchor, Karl Böhm Bastien und Bastienne, K50 Ilse Holweg (Bastienne), Waldemar Kment (Bastien), Walter Berry (Colas) John Pritchard |
This valuable three CD set couples two of the most admired complete recordings of Mozart operas from the 1950s which have long since been unavailable. Karl Böhm was one of the greatest Mozart conductors of his generation, and on this complete Viennese recording of Le nozze di Figaro he directs a cast which at the time could not have been bettered, featuring some of the finest post-war Mozart singers. Sir John Pritchard completes the set with a sparking performance of Mozart's very early one-act opera Bastien und Bastienne, a delightful opera which is very rarely heard today. The recorded sound is of excellent vintage. “Jurinac serves Countess Almaviva with lovely tone, but her breath-control is challenged by Bohm's protracted tempo for 'Porgi amor'...The female side is admirable, for Streich sparkles in silvery freshness and Christa Ludwig's Cherubino benefits from a rounded tone...Berry, in rousing voice, is an ebullient Figaro. Paul Schoffler's voice has lost some richness, but he is an intelligent singer.” International Record Review, December 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 8 - 10 working days. |

Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde has always been one of Böhm’s most famous specialties, and he literally owned the work during a decade at the Bayreuth Festival during the Sixties. His Isolde at Bayreuth as well as in this Metropolitan Opera performance from New York is Birgit Nilsson, who made her Met debut just a few weeks prior to this performance to sensational acclaim. Tristan is Ramón Vinay, for many people the greatest Heldentenor in the years after Lauritz Melchior. His Bayreuth Tristans under Karajan and Jochum are well remembered, and this New York performance still finds him at the peak of his powers. Available for the first time in the UK market in any form. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
