Benjamin Britten

Benjamin Britten (Conductor)

Born: 22nd November 1913, Lowestoft, Suffolk,

Died: 4th December 1976

Nationality: British

'Though best-known as one of the greatest British composers to have lived, Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) was also highly respected as a conductor of his own works and those of others (particularly baroque and early twentieth-century English composers) – in 1952 he was offered the position of musical director at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, but turned it down in favour of concentrating on composition.

His interpretations of his own works remain in the front rank of the current catalogue, and many are preserved on Decca, with whom he had a long-standing partnership: his recordings of the War Requiem, The Turn of the Screw, Peter Grimes, Albert Herring and the Sinfonia da Requiem in particular regularly top lists of recommendations, and his accounts of Bach, Purcell, Elgar and Mozart are also held in high regard.'
