Margherita Chiminelli (soprano) & Sonia Turchetta (mezzo-soprano) Divertimento Ensemble, Sandro Gorli A monographic CD devoted to Stefano Gervasoni [b.1962], from 2006 titular professor of composition at the National Superior Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris and one of the internationally most considered composers. 'Godspell' was born from Gervasoni's meeting with Philip Levine in April 2000. The American poet agreed to write five brief poems for Gervasoni [he usually favours longer poems], conceived as a single cycle. The end of 'Least Bee' coincides with the beginning of 'Godspell' and the two pieces are connected not least by their American authors, Levine and Emily Dickinson. We also find a certain spiritual presence. The texts express a pessimistic vision of the world and Gervasoni's music creates parallels with these texts. In 'Least Bee' the smallest bee becomes a world, a sun.... “In both [vocal works], Gervasoni matches the literary imagery with wonderfully vivid instrumental gestures...The three purely instrumental works are less vivid, but still finely crafted; there's a real, distinctive musical mind at work in all of them.” The Guardian, 16th May 2013 **** |

| | | Donatoni Edition Volume 7: Dieci anni dopo
Lorenzo Missaglia (flute) & Mario Marzi (saxophone) Divertimento Ensemble & Italian Saxophone Quartet, Sandro Gorli In August 2010, it will be ten years since Franco Donatoni’s passing; long enough to try to relate the history of this musician who lived with a rare intensity and who remains an indispensable reference point in contemporary music. The Divertimento Ensemble and Italian Saxophone Quartet are conducted by Sandro Gorli, who founded the Ensemble in 1977 and who was Donatoni’s pupil. “Donatoni's music always engages the ear as much as the brain; the bright, immediate detail of many of his wind-dominated textures are counterpointed with moments of sensuous smoothness, and sudden explosions of energy, all perfectly controlled. This is a ravishing collection, beautifully performed.” The Guardian, 19th August 2010 ***** “The 18-minute Tema, the earliest of the pieces (1981), begins with bright Boulezian trills and adds exuberance to sonic exuberance. Luci I and II are brief alto-flute solos. Rasch II for saxophone quartet, vibraphone, marimba, percussion and piano is tinctured by jazz and full of modern-music friskiness.” Sunday Times, 29th August 2010 *** | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
