Four Last Songs

“Strauss singing doesn't come much better than this. No doubt the composer himself, with his love of the soprano voice, would have been enthralled by Isokoski's glorious singing. He might also have approved of Janowski's straightforward, quite brisk conducting as he was never one to sentimentalise his own music. With a combination of free, unfettered tone, not a hint of strain in high-lying passages, a fine legato and an amazingly long breath, Isokoski fulfils every demand of her chosen songs. To those attributes she adds just a hint of quick vibrato, which she uses unerringly to expressive purpose throughout.
Add the depth of feeling she brings to inwardly emotional pieces such as Befreit, Ruhe meineSeele! and, above all, Morgen!, a perfect realisation of this oft-recorded piece, and you have performances to rival any of the greats of the past.
She reminds one most of Lisa della Casa, the first soprano to record the Four Last Songs, and Sena Jurinac. She has the same smiling timbre, the same natural style, the same avoidance of wallowing in music that contains its own proportion of sentiment. Try the ecstatic execution of the final verse of 'Beim Schlafengehen' and you'll understand. If, on the other hand, you prefer a more leisurely approach, there are always Janowitz and Karajan.
Janowski is obviously at one with his soprano, not only here but also in Zueignung. Refined playing from the Berlin Radio Symphony and an open recording complete the pleasure.”

Bruckner: Mass No. 3 in F minor

Bruckner: Mass No. 3 in F minor

Lenneke Ruiten (soprano), Iris Vermillion (mezzo), Shawn Mathey (tenor), Franz Josef Selig (bass-baritone)

Swiss Romande Orchestra, Rundfunkchor Berlin, Marek Janowski

In 2008 PentaTone started the recording of a complete Bruckner Symphonies cycle with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande conducted by Marek Janowski. All of them have now been recorded and most of them have been releases (with the exception of Symphonies Nrs. 2 and 4 which will be released later this year).

The cycle received a lot of critical acclaim. Gramophone reviewer Edward Seckerson mentioned “There’s more than a touch of the great Euchen Jochum in Janowski’s approach”. The current release is complementary to the Symphonies cycle and features the renowned Rundfunkchor Berlin and an excellent cast of soloists. Recorded in superior surround sound in the fine acoustics of Victoria Hall Geneva, makes this recording a must buy for Bruckner aficionados. There is currently no version on SA-CD available in the market.

Albert Roussel: Complete Symphonies

Albert Roussel: Complete Symphonies

Roussel:

Symphony No. 1 'Le Poème de la forêt'

Symphony No. 2, Op. 23

Symphony No. 3 in G minor, Op. 42

Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 53

France’s symphonic tradition may not compare to the immensity of Germany’s, but it has produced a number of impressive works. This release is dedicated to those by Albert Roussel, one of classical music’s most distinguished late-starters.

The compilation begins with the delightful Poème de la forêt – Roussel’s first great work of importance and one whose strong Impressionist flavour is revealed through the use of picturesque movement titles. From the Second Symphony’s powerful proportions to No.3’s cyclic nature, we encounter a composer whose music was beginning to harbour a fierce and concentrated energy. His final work in the genre, written three years before his death in 1937, represents for many the apex of his achievements.

Roussel may never have gained the popularity of Debussy and Ravel, but he was an important and compelling composer whose symphonies combined both 20th-century style and colour with Classical structures. Tracing the entire development of his style, this assured recording by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France brings Roussel’s distinctive voice to life.

“It is Janowski’s exquisite nuancing of melody (timing as well as shaping) that catches the ear as often as the correctly achieved balances, the purity of tone and the general limpidity of the sound.” Gramophone Magazine, June 1996

Marek Janowski conducts Saint-Saëns, Chausson & D'Indy

Marek Janowski conducts Saint-Saëns, Chausson & D'Indy

Chausson:

Soir de fête, Op. 32

Indy:

Symphonie sur un chant montagnard

Saint-Saëns:

Symphony No. 2 in A minor, Op. 55

All the pieces included here are by French composers who lived during the impressionist period. D’Indy’s Symphonie sur un chant montagnard français is a sort of hybrid work, a mixture of a symphony and a piano concerto.

This work enables the highly regarded Martin Helmchen to demonstrate his musical and technical skills once again.

“The luminous orchestral palettre of d'Indy's Symphonie sur un chant montagnard francais is beautifully defined here, with Martin Helmchen a scintillating partner in the piano solo, and Chausson's Soir de fete is given with due rapture and instrumental glow. This is an imaginative programme, performed with panache.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011

“Janowski and his rejuvenated orchestra ensure that elegant phrasing, transparent textures and a balletic rhythmic awareness generate colour and atmosphere without overload. No profound hidden agendas, just a vital, smiling realization of unpretentious music beautifully crafted for enjoyment by audience and performers alike.” International Record Review, January 2012

“A full-blooded approach lends impetus to Chausson’s Soir de fête, and Saint-Saëns’s Second Symphony achieves cohesion through Marek Janowski’s conducting and the orchestra’s playing.” The Telegraph, 27th October 2011

Henze: Symphonies Nos. 3-5

Henze: Symphonies Nos. 3-5

Henze:

Symphony No. 3

Symphony No. 4

Symphony No. 5

In his essay ‘Über Instrumentalkomposition’ of 1963 Hans Werner Henze states: "Everything moves toward the theatre and comes back from there.”

Henze's Symphonies 3, 4 and 5 move within this combination of theatre and symphonic music. The first approach is noticeable in Symphony No. 3: “I composed this piece (…) in an attempt to keep the notion of 'symphonic music' and the idea of classical and Romantic forms separate. Consequently, the listener is not supposed to look for those elements which were characteristic of 19th-century symphonies.”

Symphony No. 4 is concretely linked with Henze's own music-theatre works: originally, it constituted the finale of Act II of his opera König Hirsch/King Stag.

Symphony No. 5 is also connected to the theatre: A 'leitmotif' appearing in all three movements goes back to Henze's song 'My own, my own' from his opera Elegie für junge Liebende/Elegy for Young Lovers. As in Symphony No. 4, the music returns from the stage back to symphonic music.

Hans Werner Henze is the recipient of the German Music Authors' 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award.

According to the jurors: “Hans Werner Henze is a prominent figure in music who was and still is very active and influential outside German and European borders. A model for generations to come. He has composed music for all genres, taught pupils who have become very famous – everything has been marked by his unmistakable quality and identity.” Henze accepted the award personally during a formal presentation at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Berlin on 14 April 2011.

We offer Hans Werner Henze our hearty congratulations as he celebrates his 85th birthday on 1 July.

“Janowski's performances are vivid and immediate, and make the old Deutsche Grammophon recordings, conducted by the composer, sound pallid in comparison.” The Guardian, 30th June 2011 ***

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Camilla Tilling (soprano), Detlef Roth (baritone)

Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Rundfunkchor Berlin, Marek Janowski

The same choir, Rundfunkchor Berlin, recently recorded this work for Deutsche Grammophon but was not satisfied with the result. This is probably the best choir for this repertoire in the world and it was keen on re-recording this work for PentaTone. Janowski proves how well he understands the repertoire.

“the performance is both beautifully shaped (especially from the woodwinds) and devotional in spirit. The closing 'Selig sind die Toten' presents a warming richness of texture, the underlying rhythmic pulse admirably clear, while the sombre processional of 'Denn alles Fleisch' builds well” Gramophone Magazine, February 2011

“The orchestral playing is outstanding - even by VPO standards...With Genia Kühmeier and, particularly, a gloriously dramatic Thomas Hampson standing out as about the two most admirable soloists I've heard in the work for many a long year, this has to be an essential recording for anyone who relishes richly romantic music-making at its best.” International Record Review, March 2011
