Sibelius - Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5

Sibelius:

Symphony No. 4 in A minor, Op. 63

Symphony No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 82

“For all the lustrous Berlin playing, this is Karajan at his strangest. His approach to the Fourth Symphony's chiselled spareness is conducting-as-juice-extraction. And in the Fifth, the insistent effect-consciousness soon palls. Really for Karajan fans only.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2008 ***

La Scala, Milan, Herbert von Karajan

Studio recording, 1956

“The combination of Karajan and Callas is formidably impressive. There is toughness and dramatic determination in Callas's singing...Barbieri is a magnificent Azucena, Panerai is a strong, incisive Count, and di Stefano is at his finest as Manrico...The Regis transfer is clean and clear” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition ***

Brahms: Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73, etc.

Brahms:

Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73

Schubert:

Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D759 'Unfinished'

Recorded in May of 1955 these are among the very first stereo recordings to be made by EMI and are a supreme tribute to the recording partnership of producer, Walter Legge, and balance engineer, Christopher Parker.

The old Kingsway Hall in London had extremely fine acoustics and was a very popular recording venue until it became structurally unsound and had to be closed down in the 1970s.

“…this is one of the best disc versions of the Second on the market, and the substantial Schubert bonus is no less recommendable” Penguin Guide

Verdi: Aida

Verdi: Aida

Renata Tebaldi (Aida), Carlo Bergonzi (Radamès), Giulietta Simionato (Amneris), Cornell MacNeil (Amonasro), Arnold Van Mill (Ramfis), Fernando Corena (Il Re di Egitto), Eugenia Ratti (Una Sacerdotessa), Piero De Palma (Un Messaggero)

Wiener Philharmoniker & Singverein der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, Herbert von Karajan

Recorded: Sofiensaal, Vienna, September 1959

“...unrivalled for many years for its spectacle in this most stereophonic of operas...helped by having a Viennese orchestra and chorus, rather than an Italian one that was determinded to do things in a 'traditional' manner, but most important of all is the musicianship and musical teamwork of his solists. Bergonzi in particular emerges here as a model among tenors, with a rare feeling for the shaping of phrases and attention to detail...Tebaldi's interpretation of the part of Aida is well known and much loved. Her creamy tone colour rides beautifully over the phrases and she too acquires a new depth of imagination.” Penguin Guide
