Istvan Kertesz (Conductor)
Born: 28th August 1929, Budapest, Hungary,
Died: 16th April 1973, Israel
Nationality: Hungarian
One of the great tragedies of 20th century musical life was the untimely death in 1973 (a swimming accident while on holiday) of this brilliant Hungarian conductor. He studied with Kodaly and Weiner at the Liszt Academy in Budapest and fled Hungary with his family in the 1956 uprising.
He leaves a substantial legacy on Decca, highlighted by the complete Dvorak Symphonies (recorded in the 1960's with the London Symphony) which are still regarded as the finest integral set of these masterworks ever recorded.
