On the heels of the release by Deutsche Grammophon of the complete Ring Cycle DVD Box from the Met, this 2CD compilation is the ultimate must-have for any music and Wagner lover.

It includes the highlights of all the “Ring” operas, featuring the stars of the recent New York Met production: Bryn Terfel, Deborah Voigt and Jonas Kaufmann.

Ride of the Valkyries, Prelude from das Rheingold, Siegfried's death are all featured on our 2 CD compilation.

“The bleeding chunks, two operas to a disc, are more or less predictable...but there are tracks to treasure. Bryn Terfel's singing of Wotan's Farewell and his account of the Wanderer's Dir Unweisen Ruf'ich Ins Ohr are moving; Hans-Peter König gives a black, implacable account of Hagen's Watch, while the easy fluency and almost baritonal richness of Jonas Kaufmann's Siegmund [is] a joy” The Guardian, 26th September 2012 ***

“Terfel is the finest Wotan before the public today...Blythe's brief appearances as Fricka find her in superb voice...Kaufmann is extraordinary as Siegmund; the velvety-chocolate depths of his baritonal-tenor and his aristocratic phrasing...[are] worth the cost of the set alone...Voigt is not the loudest Brunnhilde on record but sounds girlish in Walkure and is note-accurate, although sometimes a little pinched at the top of her range” International Record Review, December 2012

Luciano Pavarotti (Andrea Chénier), Maria Guleghina (Maddalena di Coigny), Juan Pons (Carlo Gérard), Wendy White (Bersi), Judith Christin (La Contessa di Coigny), Stephanie Blythe (Madelon)

The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus, James Levine

This Dino Yannopoulos-directed production ran at the Metropolitan Opera at irregular intervals until 1977, with the title role attracting the likes of Carlo Bergonzi, Franco Corelli, and Plácido Domingo. Maddalena would be sung by Renata Tebaldi, Martina Arroyo, and Eileen Farrell; Gérard by Robert Merrill and Ettore Bastianini; and Fausto Cleva, Lamberto Gardelli, and James Levine presided in the pit.

Levine again conducted when Nicolas Joël’s production premiered in April 1996 with Luciano Pavarotti in the title role, opposite Aprile Millo and Juan Pons. This DVD captures a telecast from the following season, with Pavarotti and Pons reprising their portrayals and Maria Guleghina as Maddalena.

Wiener Staatsoper, James Levine

Directed, Set & Costume Design by JEAN-PIERRE PONNELLE

This production of Mozart’s Magic Flute received enormous and unanimous approval, when it was premiered in Salzburg. Endless applause on the night and an unusual state of accord from the international press where enthusiastic reviews soon gave this staging the status of a legend.

Of course, none of that would have had the same appeal if it had not been in accord with Mozart’s music, performed quite un-theoretically, with perfect blend of lightness and pathos, humour and profundity, by James Levine and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra; nor would it all have worked without a truly Festival-worthy cast of singers whose strengths were perfectly balanced and every single one of whom – right down to the members of the chorus – was totally committed to the work.

Puccini: Manon Lescaut

Puccini: Manon Lescaut

Mirella Freni (Manon Lescaut), Luciano Pavarotti (Des Grieux), Dwayne Croft (Lescaut), Giuseppe Taddei (Geronte), Ramon Vargas (Edmondo), Cecilia Bartoli (Una voce sola)

Metropolitan Opera Orchestra & Chorus, James Levine

Recorded in 1992

“With Luciano Pavarotti as a powerful Des Grieux, James Levine conducts a comparably big-boned performance of Manon Lescaut, bringing out the red-blooded drama of Puccini's first big success, while not ignoring its warmth and tender poetry...The rest of the cast is strong too, with Dwayne Croft a magnificent Lescaut” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition ****

“Levine conveys the tensions and atmosphere of a stage performance in a way that plainly owes much to his experience at the Metropolitan...it avoids the feeling of a studio performance....[Pavarotti], characteristically, points word meaning with a bright-eyed intensity that compels attention.” Gramophone Magazine, November 1993
