| | | Johann Strauss I Edition, Volume 18
Strauss, J, I: | Rosen ohne Dornen, Walzer, Op. 166 Wiener-Früchteln, Walzer, Op. 167 Willkommen-Rufe, Walzer, Op. 168 Die vier Haimonskinder, Quadrille, Op. 169 Maskenlieder, Walzer, Op. 170 Eunomien-Tänze, Walzer, Op. 171 Odeon-Tänze, Walzer, Op. 172 Marianka-Polka, Op. 173 Musen-Quadrille, Op. 174 |
Despite a contemporary critic’s declaration that ‘the waltz is the dance of love and it contains within it more poetry than all the other national dances of the world!’, Johann Strauss I happily penned other dances such as the quadrilles and polka heard here. Nonetheless, captivating waltzes composed for Viennese open-air galas, fairs, festive balls, carnivals and other celebrations comprise the bulk of music on Volume 18 of Marco Polo’s popular edition of the elder Strauss’s evergreen music. ‘Visions of the great dance halls of old Vienna filled with happy dancers hearing these pieces for the first time will dominate your thoughts’ American Record Guide. | | | (also available to download from $9.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Recorded live at the Römersteinbruch St. Margarethen, 11 July 2008
Kristiane Kaiser (Violetta), Jean-François Borras (Alfredo), Georg Tichy (Giorgio Germont), Magdalena Anna Hofmann (Flora), Stefanie Kopinits (Annina), Michael Kurz (Gastone), Daniel Ohlenschläger (Barone Douphol), Dieter Kschwendt-Michel (Marchese d'Obigny), Alessandro Teliga (Dottore Grenvil) Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, Ernst Märzendorfer Booklet Notes: English, German, French Subtitles: Italian, English, German The Opera Festival St. Margarethen in Austria is one of Europe's most important open-air festivals: more than 100.000 people have seen La Traviata this year. Set on Europe's largest natural stage in a quarry classified as a UNESCO world heritage site, with a highly acclaimed stage design and interpretation. One of the most popular works in the history of opera. Kristiane Kaiser and Jean François Borras in the lead roles bring the gripping plot to life and enact the drama with great vocal skill. The luxurious production includes a ballet, fireworks and the replica of an entire theatre on stage. Directed by renowned film directors, this DVD brings a beautiful summer night at the opera into your home. "…a spectacle filled with splendour and luxury" Krone “The production from St Margarthen in South Austria… has its own attractions. These lie principally in the spectacle, on stage and off. The party scenes are rich in life and colour, and as parties both may be said to swing. But the real scene-stealer is the scenery itself, the extraordinary Baroque façade which opens up on a stage ablaze with candle-light, and all against the background of the evening and night sky eventually to be brightened with a show of fireworks scarcely to be matched west of Beijing.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2009 “Kaiser, with stamina aplenty, has a most attractive timbre and she projects strongly..Borras makes a dashing lover moving imaginatively through passionate declarations of love to anxiety, anger and despair. Their duets blend in honeyed legato...Georg Tichy’s Germont is a tad stiff but in strong oaken tones he cajoles iron-fist-in-velvet-glove like...Kristiane Kaiser shines as Violetta – the stand out element in a satisfactory production.” MusicWeb International, 8th December 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Johann Strauss I Edition, Volume 12
Strauss, J, I: | Taglioni-Walzer, Op. 110 Londoner Saison-Walzer, Op. 112 Die Berggeister, Walzer, Op. 113 Rosenblätter, Walzer, Op. 115 Wiener Gemüths-Walzer, Op. 116 Myrthen, Walzer, Op. 118 Tanz-Recepte, Walzer, Op. 119 Mode-Quadrille, Op. 13 |
In a career that spanned a period from the 1820s until his death in 1849, the older Johann Strauss established an unrivalled position for himself among composers and performers of dance music in Vienna. His own achievements were continued by his three sons, ensuring that the name of Strauss was inextricably identified with the musical pleasures of nineteenth century Vienna. The Waltzes included on this recording all reflect topical events. Two sets are a tribute to the great ballerina Marie Taglioni; the Dance Prescriptions, written for the medical fraternity, were said to quicken the pulse sufficiently to cure even the worst hypochondriac, while Myrtles named by Strauss after the evergreen plant symbolic of undying love, celebrated the wedding of Queen Victoria. | | | (also available to download from $9.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Igor Morosow (Nabucco), Bruno Ribeiro (Ismaele), Simon Yang (Zaccaria), Gabriella Morigi (Abigaille), Elisabeth Kulman (Fenena), Janusz Monarcha (High Priest of Baal) Arad State Philharmonic Chorus & Europasymphony Orchestra, Ernst Märzendorfer Recorded live at the Römersteinbruch St. Margarethen,
14 July 2007 “[Morosow] is persuasive in his emotional transformations from cruel tyrant to confused madman to supplicant...Bruno Ribeiro, is a dashing and sturdy-voiced Ismaele...But it is Gabriella Morigi who steals the limelight as Abigaille...Her acting is riveting; she not so much chews the scenery as devours it. Her singing is equally melodramatic.” MusicWeb International “The emphasis of the EuroArts version is the sheer spectacle of this 2007 production from the St Margareten Opera Festival. It really goes over the top, with Nabucco making his entry on a huge siege machine...Morigi is a properly histrionic Abigaille...it is the superb singing of the chorus which is the most thrilling part of the opera” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition *** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
