Josep Pons

Josep Pons (Conductor)

Born: 1957, Puig Reig, Spain

Nationality: Spanish

The Spanish-Catalan conductor Josep Pons was born in Berguedà in 1957 and studied in Monserrat and Barcelona. From 1994 to 2004 he was principal conductor of the Orqueta Ciodad de Granada, and in 2012 he took up the position of music director at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

Pons has championed Spanish and South American music throughout his career: his discography includes Granados’s Goyescas with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (‘Pons energises his forces with electrifying power’ – Sunday Times), numerous recordings of Falla with the Orquestra de Cambra Teatre Lliure, a recital of Spanish songs and arias with soprano Patrica Petibon, and Noches en los jardines de Espana with Javier Perianes and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He is also acclaimed for his recordings of late twentieth-century and contemporary music, with recording credits including the world premiere recordings of several large-scale by Jonathan Dove on NMC, and a recording of Berio’s Sinfonia and Mahler song arrangements (with baritone Matthias Goerne), which won a BBC Music Magazine Award and an ECHO Klassik Award in 2017.
