BA Zimmermann: Cello Concerto, Photoptosis & Tratto II

Cello Concerto

Photoptosis - Prelude for large orchestra

Tratto II

With “studio reihe neuer musik”, WERGO created a trademark of advanced contemporary music in the 1960s. Some of these important recordings have not been available on CD until now. On the occasion of its anniversary, the label now releases gems from the early days of its 50-year history: highlights of 20th-century music history which have lost nothing of their topicality and liveliness, in standard-setting recordings of great performers and audiophile sound quality.

This series starts with a CD of works by Bernd Alois Zimmermann. His complex “pluralistic” style fuses past, present and future into a musical unit of the highest order. The “Concerto pour violoncelle et orchestre en forme de ‘Pas de trios’” created in the late 1960s develops its binding power from a single musical nucleus; ‘Tratto II’ and ‘Photoptosis’ represent Zimmermann's compositional opening of time and space.

The recordings were originally published on LP in 1972 (WERGO, WER60062) and have been awarded the Grand Prix du Disque of the Académie Charles Cros.

Rolf Riehm: Works for Orchestra

Rolf Riehm: Works for Orchestra

Riehm:

Die Tränen des Gletschers

Nuages immortels oder: Focusing On Solos (Medea in Avignon)

Berceuse

Rolf Riehm is a composer and oboist whose work has mainly been centered in Frankfurt. Riehm studied composition with Wolfgang Fortner in Freiburg and made his debut at the 1966 Darmstadt Festival playing his solo oboe piece “Ungebräuchlisches”

In 1974, Riehm took permanent residence at Frankfurt as a composition professor at the Musikhochschule. Riehm's is best-known for his work based on the Brothers Grimm, “Machandelboom”. He has also written several pieces for orchestra and for solo instruments with interesting and unusual titles. Riehm's work is eclectic, polystylistic, and, by his own admission, "politically incorrect."

Accanto Music for a clarinettist with orchestra

Consolation I for 12 voices and 4 percussionists

Arno Arndt, Siegfried Fink, Hermann Gschwendtner & Michael Ranta (percussion)

Kontrakadenz, for full orchestra

RSO Stuttgart des SWR, Michael Gielen

For the occasion of Helmut Lachenmann's 75th birthday, on 27 November 2010, WERGO presents a CD re-release of reference recordings of works published on LP in 1985. "Here we must depart from a conception that only accepts the 'showy' side of sound, usually promoted as a medium for a certain kind of spurious social ostentation", the conductor Clytus Gottwald wrote about Lachenmann's ‘sound realism’. Lachenmann creates "music that removes the false aspects of sounds by returning sound to its natural realm".

“Accanto, for clarinettist and orchestra, is a savage deconstruction of the Mozart concerto. Consolation 1 is a political essay for 12 voices and percussion. Kontrakadenz generates a tremendous negative energy.” Sunday Times, 23rd January 2011 ***

Impromptu in F Minor, D935 No. 1

As Alfred Brendel celebrates his 80th birthday on 5 January 2011, Decca is marking this momentous occasion with FOUR major catalogue releases.

He’s a legend of the piano world, revered and applauded the world over. For long an exclusive Philips Classics artist, Alfred Brendel is the recipient of the 2010 Gramophone Lifetime Achievement Award. Famed for his peerless interpretations of Viennese classics, 2011 sees Brendel celebrate his 80th birthday and for it we present four iconic sets – available at budget price for the first time.

This next special release is dedicated specifically to the Birthday of Gramophone ‘Life Time Achievement’ Award- winning artist, Brendel.

Showcasing our personal favourites, Decca presents 2 classic LIVE Brendel recordings with the Brahms Piano Concerto no.1 and the Mozart Piano Concerto no. 25.

“he is in absolute control throughout, technically flawless and with a characteristic clarity of texture. What especially distinguishes Brendel's interpretations is the way that the structure and the architecture of the work comes foremost...the playing [of Op. 110] is of unfailing beauty, with the final return to the tonic key a true apotheosis and a triumphant homecoming.” International Record Review, March 2011

“Everything has its place yet nothing sounds contrived. Brendel is an intellectual but not, at the piano, a lecturer. He illuminates but never pontificates. Seldom has his capacity for symphonic synthesis found nobler or more stirring expression than in the present reading of the Brahms D minor Concerto...[The Mozart] had me wreathed in smiles of sheer delight.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2011 *****

“Perhaps the biggest thrill is Brendel's Brahms First from 1985...Right from the thunderous opening timpani roll it packs a terrific punch...[Brendel's reading] never tr[ies] to lure the listener through sumptuousness of tone but instead offer[s] piercing intelligence and a sure-footed way through Brahms's mountainous landscape...[The Beethoven] is a reading of profound wisdom, pathos and tenderness that leaves you wishing for more.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2011
