Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Kirill Petrenko (conductor), Dmitri Tcherniakov (director)

Lulu, Alban Berg’s hauntingly mysterious opera in a new production by Dmitri Tcherniakov, has been one of the major events of the 2015 Bayerische Staatsoper season : an ideal setting for conductor Kirill Petrenko first-ever DVD recording ! A sensuous and impenetrable opera, Berg’s masterpiece depicts the burning and sometimes bestial intensity of human relationships through the figure of Lulu, the true femme fatale, bearer of an enigma that haunts us way beyond the end of the opera. Venenous, sibylline, deathly for who approaches her, the dangerous Lulu destroys the established and bourgeois order she evolves in, carrying away with her all certainty, just like the audacious and demanding musical language Berg invented to give form to this unreachable character. Frank Wedekind’s work proved indeed to be an extremely fertile ground for the dodecaphonic composer’s imagination, and gave birth to one of the most singular and ambitious work of art of the twentieth century. With the privilege of a dream cast, gathering Berg’s best interprets, this new production of Lulu is conducted by Kirill Petrenko, and staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov. A visionary genius considered as the contemporary stage ‘enfant terrible’, it is with a shattering realism that he directs those characters, hostages to their own passions and darkest fantasies, and reveals the complexity of this great human and social tragedy. Marlis Petersen is Lulu, a role she was then singing for the ninth time, and which awarded her, for this production, the title of ‘singer of the year’ by German magazine Opernwelt

Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 2

Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No. 2

Rachmaninov:

Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18

Moments Musicaux, Op. 16

Although they were separated due to a period of creative despair which interrupted his work, both the second Piano Concerto and the Moments Musicaux date from Rachmaninov’s early period, during which he was active primarily as a composer rather than a pianist. This explains the character of the second Piano Concerto, which partakes of both chamber music and symphony, despite the dazzling virtuosity of the solo piano part.

Pianist Dejan Lazic was born in Zagreb, Croatia, and grew up in Salzburg where he studied at the ‘Mozarteum’. He is quickly establishing a reputation worldwide as “a brilliant pianist and a gifted musician full of ideas and able to project them persuasively” (Gramophone). The New York Times hailed his performance as “full of poetic, shapely phrasing and vivid dynamic effects that made this music sound fresh, spontaneous and impassioned”. After his recent, highly successful Edinburgh Festival recital, The Scotsman wrote: “Dejan Lazic shines like a new star”. As recitalist and soloist with orchestra, he has appeared at major venues and at numerous international festivals across Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Australia. Alongside his solo career, Dejan Lazic is also a passionate chamber musician and active as a composer. The London Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham and is recognised as one of the world’s great orchestras. The young conductor Kirill Petrenko, hails from Omsk via Austria and appointments in Meiningen and at the Komische Oper Berlin, confirms his concern for clarity and vividness in this recording as a guest conductor of the LPO.

“…Lazic's bland treatment of the famous opening bars… belies the character of the rest of the performance: the build to the first movement's climax is impressively handled… and the second and third movements are played with sensitivity and spirit. The six Moments musicaux... contain arguably the finest of Rachmaninov's keyboard music from the 19th century. ...Lazic offers some quietly unaffected playing of the odd-numbered pieces, and storms through the virtuoso even-numbers...” Gramophone Magazine, February 2009

Orchester der Komischen Oper Berlin, Kirill Petrenko

Kirill Petrenko is due to succeed Simon Rattle as the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and these recordings demonstrate the interpretive brilliance of this previously relatively unknown musician.

While Petrenko was serving as the general music director at the Berlin Comic Opera, he conducted symphonic works by Josef Suk for cpo that we are now offering to you in a 3 CD box at a special low price. Petrenko has a particular interest in Josef Suk and offers a breath-taking interpretation of the great Asreal symphony, Suk’s symphonic poem A Summer’s Tale and, finally, A Winter's Tale overture, after Shakespeare’s drama 'A Winter’s Tale'.

The Orchestra of the Berlin Comic Opera demonstrates that it "is absolutely equal to the high demands of the scores, and Petrenko’s interpretive approach illuminates Suk’s complex tone world and shows it in a suspenseful and richly pictorial light" (klassik-heute.com).

Frankfurter Opern – und Museumsorchester, Kirill Petrenko

This release is the first complete recording of an opera conducted by Kirill Petrenko and is a live recording of a June 2010 performance. The press was unanimously enthusiastic about this opera; …Petrenko, who has time and time again drawn attention to himself with his exceptional results – in Berlin, in Lyon, in Munich, and now in Frankfurt…” Neue Zürcher Zeitung

“The cast is decent, if not spectacular. Peter Bronder is reliable in the title role, and Wolfgang Koch is a slightly stolid Borromoeo” The Guardian, 19th April 2012 ***

“It's a well-played ensemble performance under a wise old stage-director (Harry Kupfer)...Frankfurt's cast has plenty of gutsy ecclesiastical characters in the Council scene...Koch is a worthy Borromeo and the whole is a triumph for British tenor Peter Bronder in the title-role.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2012
