Nationality: Russian

Maxim Emelyanychev was born in Nizhny Novgorod in 1988 and studied conducting with Gennady Rozhdestvensky in Moscow, alongside training as a harpsichord and fortepianist – he works regularly with Il Pomo d’Oro in both capacities, and his discography with the group includes Joyce DiDonato’s multi-award-winning In War and Peace: Harmony Through Music (2016) on Erato, Arie Napoletane with Max Cencic (2015) on Decca, Anima Sacra with Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński (2018) on Erato, and Handel’s Serse (with Franco Fagioli in the title-role) on Deutsche Grammophon. In 2018 it was announced that Emelyanychev would succeed Robin Ticciati as principal conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra; reviewing his debut concert in the role, The Times described the performances as ‘exhilarating from first note to last’.
