Boxed Set Selections - July 2017
Comprehensive birthday tributes to Vladimir Ashkenazy and Daniel Barenboim (who turn 80 and 75 respectively this year) have been receiving a lot of attention in the office over recent weeks. And as a new production of La Clemenza di Tito opens at Glyndebourne, it's great to have chance to revisit some of the Festival's earliest Mozartian triumphs thanks to a collection of Fritz Busch's recordings of the three Da Ponte operas from the 1930s.
A celebration of the German conductor's Mozart legacy at the Sussex festival, including complete performances of Le nozze di Figaro (starring Glyndebourne's co-founder Audrey Mildmay as Susanna), Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte from the 1930s, plus substantial excerpts from a 1951 Idomeneo starring Richard Lewis and Sena Jurinac which is widely regarded as one of the greatest Mozart performances in the Festival's history.
Available Formats: 9 CDs, MP3, FLAC
7 discs presenting Gieseking's 1950 Bach broadcasts for Radio Saarbrücken in new remasterings, including the complete Partitas and Well-Tempered Clavier. Almost all of the recordings appear on Deutsche Grammophon for the first time here; the Schumann Piano Concerto under Wilhelm Furtwängler with the Berliner Philharmoniker is a delightful bonus.
