Jacquelyn Wagner (Fiordiligi), Michèle Losier (Dorabella), Frédéric Antoun (Ferrando), Philippe Sly (Guglielmo), Paulo Szot (Don Alfonso), Ginger Costa-Jackson (Despina)

Paris Opera Orchestra and Chorus, Philippe Jordan, Anne Teresa De Keersmaker (director and choreographer)

Dramaturgy: Jan Vandenhouwe

The direction of Così fan tutte has been entrusted to the choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker who has chosen to embody each of the characters through both a singer and a dancer. From the preconceived notion of constant and eternal love, the lovers shift progressively towards the more complex realisation that feelings of love are more akin to perpetual motion.

The Art of Patrice Bart - La Petite Danseuse de Degas

Levaillant:

La Petite Danseuse De Degas

World premiere recording, live from the Opéra Garnier, Paris 2010

Clairemarie Osta (The Little Dancer), Dorothee Gilbert (The Etoile Dancer), Mathieu Ganio (The Ballet Master) & Jose Martinez (The Subscription Holder)

Corps de Ballet de l’Opera national de Paris & Orchestre de l’Opera national de Paris, Koen Kessels

Original idea by Patrice Bart & Martine Kahane

Choreography by Patrice Bart

The idea of creating a ballet came to Brigitte Lefèvre, the Ballet’s dance director, after reading Martine Kahane’s research about Degas’s 1881 sculpture ‘La Petite Danseuse de quatorze ans’. Although numerous exhibitions, books and films had already been dedicated to Degas and dance until then, no choreographic work had ever really done so. Choreographer Patrice Bart and composer Denis Levaillant translated the intrinsic modernity of a 19th-century story into music and the language of the stage.

Hamburg Ballett

Choreography, Staging and Lighting Design: John Neumeier

John Neumeier’s free adaptation of Thomas Mann’s novella Death in Venice for the marvellous dancers of the Hamburg Ballett walks a fine line between astute theatricality and melodrama, between brilliant passages of movement and banal gestures. The primary message is that the life of an artist - even a famous, successful one - can be hell unless he’s in creative touch with his inner child, his emotions.

Don Quichot – an audience favourite of prestigious companies worldwide – is a dazzling display of high spirits, virtuosity and Spanish temperament. The leading Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky has drawn inspiration for his production from the libretto of the first version of Don Quichot by Marius Petipa, created in 1869. The modern designs for the ballet, by the renowned French designer Jérôme Kaplan, refer to the times of Cervantes.

The Art of Marius Petipa - Raymonda

Glazunov:

Raymonda, Op. 57

Live from Teatro alla Scala, Milan 2011

Olesia Novikova (Raymonda), Friedemann Vogel (Jean de Brienne) & Mick Zeni (Abderahman)

Corps de Ballet & Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, Michail Jurowski

Original choreography: Marius Petipa (1898)

Choreographic revival and staging: Sergej Vikharev

This La Scala premiere marks the most faithful version of Raymonda yet to the original, which met with triumphant success in St Petersburg in 1898. Based on a medieval legend with ladies, knights, crusaders and Saracens, cathedrals and castles, the libretto had all the ingredients needed to spark the imagination of the young Alexander Glazunov in his first ballet score and the infinite wisdom of Marius Petipa, who complemented it with an enormously rich and endless succession of dances. Drawing on notation from the Harvard archives, original designs housed in the St Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Theatre Library, La Scala presents the last great work from the glory days of the Imperial Ballet.

Silent Cries

Sabine Kupfeberg, Karel Hruska, David Krugel & Gioconda Barbuto

Nederlands Dans Theater

Three ballets by Jiří Kylián – led by his adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen.

Exactly 20 years separate Jiří Kylián’s solo Silent Cries and his black-and-white film, Car Men, made in 2006 in collaboration with the Dutch filmmaker, Boris Paval Conen. What unites the two works is the sheer expressiveness of the dance on the one hand, and the distinctive facial gestures and body language of the dancer Sabine Kupferberg on the other.

Kupferberg is the one who pulls the strings in Car Men, victim and plotter in equal measure, prepared at all times to stand up to life’s problems – as well as to her three co-actors Escamillo, Don José and Micaëla – with humour and enigmatic wit. And so at the end of Kylián’s unusual, slapstick-like tragicomedy, she simply abandons her three colleagues, self-assured and incorrigible – just like her role model, Carmen.
