Bellini: I Capuleti e I Montecchi

Bellini: I Capuleti e I Montecchi

Joyce DiDonato (Romeo), Olga Kulchynska (Giulietta), Benjamin Bernheim (Tebaldo), Roberto Lorenzi (Lorenzo), Alexei Botnarciuc (Capellio), Gieorgij Puchalski (The companion)

Philharmonia Zürich & Chorus of the Opernhaus Zürich, Fabio Luisi (conductor) & Christof Loy (stage director)

The story of Romeo and Juliet, who pay for their passion with their lives, has been interpreted in the widest variety of literary and musical genres ever since the Renaissance. Vincenzo Bellini’s much too rarely staged Romeo and Juliet opera, I Capuleti e I Montecchi, is far removed from Shakespeare’s version: rather than telling the story of a tenderly burgeoning love, the piece is an account of the last 24 hours in the two young people’s lives. The underlying mood of the piece is thus one of melancholy – which then develops into a catastrophic maelstrom. The première of the thrilling Zurich production of this bel canto gem, directed by Christof Loy and conducted by Fabio Luisi, was enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike. The two protagonists also met with acclaim: experience world star Joyce DiDonato in the trouser role of Romeo, with the young Ukrainian soprano Olga Kulchynska at her side as Giulietta.

“Zurich’s Opera’s cast and conductor jump on board with admirable commitment. Fabio Luisi boldly sculpts the cantabile phrases without getting bogged down, and the orchestral playing is evocative, with pungent contributions from the winds…Bernheim brings conflicted ardour to Tebaldo, and Lorenzi offers compassionate mercy as Lorenzo…yet Zurich really strikes gold with the triumphant pairing of Joyce DiDonato as Romeo and Olga Kulchynska as Giulietta…tremendously affecting” Gramophone Magazine, December 2016

“DiDonato, in particular, knows how to act in this repertoire. She also, of course, knows how to sing it, imbuing her lines with elegance and urgency, musicality and, when needed, bravura...If you can overlook the sometimes baffling production, this is recommendable as a well-presented, modern video version of the piece.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2015

“In this of all operas it is the singing that really matters and the superb rendition of the score we are given here – with Riccardo Frizza obtaining splendidly nuanced playing from the orchestra – will enchant viewers and listeners alike.” MusicWeb International, November 2014

“when you listen and forget about the fashion runway, this is a fine performance of Bellini's score. Joyce DiDonato is everything you would want in a Romeo, ardent and angry and in superb voice...And her Juliet, Nicole Cabell, matches her at every turn with a gloriously smoky middle registerthat effortlessly stretches up to the top extension of her voice.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2015 ****

Bellini: I Puritani

Recorded live at the Netherlands Opera, October 2009

Daniel Borowski (Lord Gualtiero Valton), Mariola Cantarero (Elvira), Riccardo Zanellato (Sir Giorgio), John Osborn (Lord Arturo Talbot), Scott Hendricks (Sir Riccardo Forth), Gregorio Gonzalez (Sir Bruno Roberton), Fredrika Brillembourg (Enrichetta di Francia)

Chorus of the Netherlands Opera & Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Giuliano Carella (conductor) & Francisco Negrin (director)

In Vincenzo Bellini’s last opera, Elvira’s love for Arturo overcomes the power-games in Puritan England, staged with darkly dramatic flair by Francisco Negrin as a world of blind dogma. Mariola Cantarero is compelling as the heroine on the verge of insanity in one of the greatest mad scenes in the history of opera. One of the leading lyric tenors today, John Osborn sings Arturo with fearless commitment and some spectacular top notes. In the pit is the bel canto specialist Giuliano Carella.

“Negrin gets some excellent performances from his cast, who are able to express emotion without being either hammy or cheesy. Scott Hendricks as the rejected lover sings nobly after a gusty start...Osborn manages a stupendous top F, non-falsetto, and his singing in the trio, lyrical but desperate, is even more wonderful...Go on, give it a whirl.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013

“The result is fascinating even if at times over-earnest...Durlovski's soprano may be on the gaunt side, but she has all the notes for the title role...A fine actor, tenor Luciano Botelho makes a complex figure of her fiance, Elvino. Gabriele Ferro conducts with an authentic sense of style.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2014 *****

“Durlovski as Amina has the necessary flexibility and ability to make the most of Bellini’s long and lovely phrase...this is musically a thoroughly distinguished performance. It is this and the dramatic wholeness with the sense of an ensemble at work that is so appealing about this recording. La Sonnambula can seem to lack dramatic interest or coherence but not here.” MusicWeb International, 22nd April 2014

“The Stuttgart team...bluntly portray Amina's sleepwalking as a mental problem...Musical, we are in the safe but far from unexciting hands of Gabriele Ferro…As well as fielding a Caruso/Bjorling-like ability to crescendo on those high peaks, Durlovski is a terrific natural actress.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2014

“No mere coloratura-canary, Ana Durlovski (recently a breathtaking Queen of the Night for Simon Rattle) was awarded the German Theatre Prize for her three-dimensional portrayal of Amina in Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito's absorbing production for Oper Stuttgart last year. Luciano Botelho sings elegantly and matches her for dramatic complexity as Elvino.” Katherine Cooper, Presto Classical, October 2014

“This performance of Bellini's lovely opera from Sardinia has a superb Amina in Eglise Gutierrez, the finest since Callas” BBC Music Magazine, May 2011 ***

“This is not a perfect Sonnambula, but visually it's as lovely as can be imagined... for [Gutierrez] alone the DVD is a 'must'. [She] is a true lyric-coloratura, with luscious warmth in the lower middle but also a glittering extension beyond high C. Vocally she has every requirement for Amina...Benini brings his considerable experience to the fore, leading a confident and stylistically astute performance” International Record Review, April 2011

“Gutierrez is quite superb...having a full, warm and womanly tone that extends with evenness, purity and flexibility into the highest range...Benini is masterful in his choice of tempi and support of his singers whilst the vibrancy and acted involvement of the Chorus of the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari is also welcome.” MusicWeb International, 6th November 2013

Orchestra e Coro del Teatro La Fenice, Gabriele Ferro

Staged by Bepi Morassi

La Sonnambula is Bellini´s first masterpiece, which brought him great fame.

The exceptional singer Jessica Pratt's schedule has included performances at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, Opernhaus Zürich and Covent Garden, working with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Kent Nagano, Sir Colin Davis and Christian Thielemann.

Bepi Morassi's staging was described by the prestigious daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung “a spirited and witty new production.”

“[Pratt] lacks Pasta’s lower range, but is spectacularly secure and pure above the stave. She is not frightened to give the vocal pyrotechnics her all when the opportunity arrives...At the end, I felt that director, Bepi Morassi and set designer, Massimo Checchetto had done a good job.” MusicWeb International, 18th December 2013

“Bepi Morassi's production...takes the piece with a pinch of irony, but arguably no more than intended by its creators...Pratt's blonde bombshell of an Amina shows good range of technical skills and moves around most of the notes with confident ease...Orchestra and chorus are both excellent.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2014 ***

“Pratt vocalises the put-upon heroine with skill and beauty...[Mukeria] clealy knows his way well round Elvino's far from easy notes, and sounds suitably Romantic. [Parodi] is wholly convincing in voice and action. [Ferro], an experienced and classy conductor of this repertoire, is on terrific form, as is his orchestra...Morassi's direction has the advantage of taking the piece seriously.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2014

Bellini: Norma

Recorded live at Het Muziektheater, Amsterdam, in 2005.

Nederlands Kamerorkest, Julian Reynolds (musical director) & Guy Joosten (stage director)

In Guy Joosten’s ingenious production of Bellini’s masterpiece, Norma is about more than just beautiful singing. It becomes a layered, timeless drama in which Norma is the archetypal successful woman struggling to retain her dominant but vulnerable position. Hasmik Papian’s lyrical and intense interpretation of the title role accentuates the striking similarity between a Druid high priestess and a modern opera diva. Conductor Julian Reynolds guides the brilliant cast, choir and Netherlands Chamber Orchestra to great heights, providing a refreshing new take on the chef d’oeuvre of bel canto.
