‘Two dazzling stars’ The Telegraph

‘Physical and sexy’ London Evening Standard

‘Kaufmann and Antonacci are that rare breed: superb singers who can also act with subtlety and passion’ The Guardian

With Anna Caterina Antonacci and Jonas Kaufmann bringing rare erotic intensity to the drama of Carmen and Don Jose, this new Royal Opera production is a darkly passionate reading of one of the world's favourite operas.

Under the baton of Music Director Antonio Pappano, Bizet's irresistible score drives the tragedy forward - powering a landmark staging of a musical masterpiece.

Menus: English . Subtitles: English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese.

Booklet notes in English, French, German

“traditionalists can relax with the Royal Opera's Raymond Gubbay-style, grand-opera Carmen. Antonio Pappano…steers the music with panachet… The production has a star in Jonas Kaufmann's José, a dangerous, lived-in interpretation of the part, sung and acted with a rare ability... Antonacci's Carmen works hard - she's stylish and genuinely sexy... Norah Amsellem's Micaëla is well vocalised and presented but never quite breaks through into a complete character.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2008

“Pappano in the pit takes the whole thing at a tremendous lick while coaxing some lovely playing from the Royal Opera House Orchestra. For all that, this is opera as spectacle with good tunes attached.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2008 ***

“everyone on stage, from stars to comprimarios and children (authentically underfoot), crackles with individual life, ideal on video... Garanča's clean-cut Baltic mezzo and fresh good looks suggest not the stereotypical gypsy wench, but a free spirit, intelligent and wilful” BBC Music Magazine, December 2010 *****

“Here is an opera DVD where, rare in my experience, each individual element matches the excellence of the others: production, cast, performance, film direction and use of the medium....Garanča has a fine sparring partner in Alagna - both roles are as well acted as they are sung...Halvorson's fluent direction conveys a real sense of occasion to the whole evening.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2010

“Not only does Ms Garanča sing with wonderful enunciation, but also with meaning and a wide variety of tonal colour. In her singing and acting she exudes Carmen’s sexuality whilst not over-egging it with hip swinging and flaunting...Along with Elina Garanča, the big plus of the performance is found in Yannick Nézet-Séguin. His idiomatic conducting has verve, vitality and sensitivity.” MusicWeb International, August 2012

“Garanča is right up there with the best. She sings with a seductive and alluring tone, and her technique is superb. The combination of her film star looks and her natural acting draw you into her character completely...Alagna also makes an excellent Don José. I think this is one of his strongest roles and he sings with both real power and refinement.” Chris O'Reilly, Presto Classical, 23rd August 2010

“Elina Garanca's striking Carmen and Barbara Frittoli's Micaela stand out, with Alagna unexpectedly affecting as Don Jose.” The Observer, 19th December 2010

“This is a calculating Carmen, who knows the worth of her assets. Some of her wily intelligence is reflected in the voice — strong in all reaches, flaming at the top...[Tahu Rhodes] prov[es] himself to be an ideal toreador, virile of voice, and very tall. All in all, a Carmen well worth seeing and hearing.” The Times, 28th August 2010

Fantastic cast with Roberto Alagna, Erwin Schrott, Marina Poplavskaya, Béatrice Uria-Monzon.

This prestigious 2011 production from the Gran Teatre del Liceu was staged by the world famous and highly controversial stage director Calixto Bieito, admired for his raw and evocative stagings.

Running Time Total: 155 minutes

BD: DTS-HD MA 5.1, PCM Stereo

“If a Barcelona Carmen suggests authentic atmosphere, forget it. It's staged by Calixto Bieito, notorious for shock-effect productions...On home ground, though, he's comparatively restrained, although he does update the opera to the 1970s...Beatrice Uria-Monzon's veteran Carmen is compelling. Roberto Alagna equals his Met video, fluently lyrical while indicating the hair-trigger violence beneath.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 **

“Updating rarely makes such a seamless case for itself as in this modern production of Carmen...Alagna has always had a certain Mad Max side to his temperament that, combined with his Italianate lyric tenor, has made him one of the best Don Joses in the business.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2012

“Piollet launches the opera thrillingly; however exhilarating the energy, the playing remains disciplined, with mingled grace and fire. Conductor and orchestra sustain that level throughout, with well-judged rubato and frequently an unerring light touch.” International Record Review, December 2011

Orchestra of the Teatro Real Madrid

Script, Choreography and Lighting Antonio Gades and Carlos Saura

Stage Setting Antonio Saura

Artistic Director Stella Arauzo

Created by Antonio Gades in collaboration with Carlos Saura, this matchless production shows how the explosive power and intensity of feeling in traditional Spanish flamenco can bring vividly to life the sultry passion, earthy emotion, love and rivalry that is Carmen.

Filmed in High Definition at the Teatro Real, Madrid for the 75th anniversary celebration of Gades’ birth, the ‘Compañía Antonio Gades’ performs Carmen to perfection.

Antonio Gades is one of the most influential figures in Spanish flamenco. He played a decisive role in getting the genre recognized by the contemporary art world. Gades started performing his choreography for Georges Bizet's Carmen in the 1960s, taking it all the way to the Teatro alla Scala, Milan. This was one of his most successful ballets. It was also brought to the big screen by Carlos Saura in 1983, a film that received an Oscar nomination and won the Jury's Award at the Cannes Festival.

“Shaham is a most voluptuous Carmen, raunchy and smoky-voiced...Andrew Jones’ Escamillo struts proudly and with self-assurance. It’s not surprising that this Carmen falls heavily for his manliness.” MusicWeb International, 9th January 2014

“Castles-Onion is creditably together with his performers, literally and atmospherically...Shaham and Car are both strong vocally...The Sydney Carmen was clearly a tightly run ship, quite a triumph in the physical circumstances. So this performance is essentially sui generis” Gramophone Magazine, March 2014

“[Shaham and Popov] are convincing in all that they do, vocally and histrionically. Popov has a powerful sound, but there is more to his singing than sheer volume...[Shaham] produces a rich, lush sound with a baritonal base which involves no forcing.” International Record Review, March 2014

Vesselina Kasarova (Carmen), Jonas Kaufmann (Don José), Isabel Rey (Micaela), Michele Pertusi (Escamillo)

Chor der Oper Zürich & Philharmonia Zurich, Franz Welser-Möst

In 2008 the Opernhaus Zurich staged this magnificent production starring virtuoso tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Don José and the Bulgarian Vesselina Kasarova as the flirtatious prima-donna of the title role. Mezzo-soprano Kasarova is dazzling as the tough-as-nails, beautifully unsentimental heroine – think classic Sophia Loren meets West Side Story.

Kaufmann, in the guise of a Spanish police officer, brilliantly portrays the blustering but naive Don José as a modern contrast of hard-edged machismo and out-of-his-depths vulnerability.

Director Matthias Hartmann refreshed one of the greatest and most popular operas of all time with touches of a contemporary setting and costume designs that emphasize the timeless archetypes of the characters. This production of Carmen enthralled audiences with the visceral physical quality of the performances, enhanced by a single panoramic set for all four acts that is stripped of the traditional Spanish styling.

Kaufmann superbly presents Don José as awkward, socially inept and doomed for disillusionment. Kasarova’s Carmen commands attention with a soft and sensual exterior that hides her ruthless and sinister heart in plain view.

Menus: English • Picture Format: 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen • Colour Mode: Colour • Region Code: 0 (worldwide)

“Kaufmann is an immaculate Don José, living each turn of the drama vocally...However, it's [Kasarova's] Carmen who makes this production unforgettable. Not just her smoky mezzo dipping down into the chest register in the Habanera, but her gifts are an actress...All praise, too, for conductor Franz Welser-Möst and the Zurich Opera House Orchestra.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2014 *****

“[Kaufmann] is his usual magnificent self. He looks great and the voice is on superb form, able to spin out long, legato lines softly and to release cascades of power when needed...Pertusi's Escamillo is bull-headed, but hs sings the role handsomely...Isabel Rey's Micaela is stereotypical but well sung.” International Record Review, December 2014

“The work is performed with the Guiraud recitative but several of Hartmann's touches seems to want to emphasise its opera comique heritage...[Kaufmann] sings magnificently...despite some moments of self-indulgence...Pertusi's Escamillo is physically imposing but the voice lacks swagger.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2014

Stage Orchestra, Orchestra and Chorus of the Wiener Staatsoper, The Vienna Boys’ Choir and Ballet of the Wiener Staatsoper, Carlos Kleiber (conuctor) & Franco Zeffirelli (director)

The Vienna Carmen from 1978 is a sensational filmed document from the musical legacy of Carlos Kleiber: the meticulous conductor only ever conducted a highly selected repertoire, and among his very few audio and video recordings are only seven complete operas.

The staging by Franco Zeffirelli is the only premiere that Kleiber ever conducted. The maestro conducted an extraordinary cast. Placido Domingo, still the young lyrical tenor, starred as Don José, and Elena Obraztsova gave a wonderful natural Carmen, a far cry from the usual she-devil erotic cliché.

The cast was completed by the young Isobel Buchanan, who stood in at this production at short notice, and included Yuri Mazurok who was later to become a high ranking Verdi baritone.

The Viennese audience in the opera house hailed the performance as a triumph.
