Marlis Petersen (Violetta Valéry), Kristina Antonie Fehrs (Flora Bervoix), Fran Lubahn (Annina), Giuseppe Varano (Alfredo Germont) & James Rutherford (Giorgio Germont) Oper Graz, Tecwyn Evans (conductor) & Peter Konwitschny (stage director) Set & Costumes by JOHANNES LEIACKER With this production of La Traviata, director Peter Konwitschny achieved a resounding success and Marlis Petersen made a sensational debut in the title role. The first ever production of La Traviata by Peter Konwitschny of Graz Opera is a highly-focused, intelligent reading of the music that was widely acclaimed by audiences. With a reduced stage set and daring cuts in the score, the production concentrates on the tragic story of the courtesan Violetta. Soprano Marlis Petersen (2010 „Singer of the Year“ in Germany) is superb in the title role. BONUS: “La Traviata” in Graz – An introduction by Ioan Holender. Including interviews with Peter Konwitschny and Marlis Petersen as well as backstage and rehearsal footage. Sound Format: PCM Stereo, dts-HD Master Audio 5.0 Picture Format: 16:9 Resolution: 1080i FULL HD Languages: IT (Original Language), GB, DE, FR, ES, JP, Korean Running Time: 110 mins + 20 mins (Bonus) Blu-ray Disc: 25 GB (Single Layer) FSK: 6 “Konwitschny is radical enough to introduce a character - silent, of course - whom Verdi and his librettist left out. That is Germont's daughter...Now to the musica performance: it is heavily cut, with the second verse of arias omitted, and also some very poignant music...Petersen is wonderful, and I think she would be in a more conventional production. She has a phenomenal vocal range, and she acts electrifyingly.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2012 **** “[Konwitschny] concentrates on the often very cruel emotional journey of the three principal characters...[Petersen, Varano and Rutherford] are intensely involved and in good vocal shape. Tecwyn Evans conducts with great rhythmic acuity and finds pace and tension without rushing or becoming unduly loud...An outstanding issue and a quite draining experience.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2012 “Konwitschny's early training in Brechtian theatre is apparent in his fierce observations on sexual hypocrisy, and in the unnerving way he confronts his audience's prurient fascination with the subject matter. The performance he gets from Petersen is little short of extraordinary in its veracity and beauty...the score has been more heavily cut than many will like. It's not for purists, though it won't leave you indifferent.” The Guardian, 8th December 2011 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Giuseppe Verdi's captivating music is performed with the orchestra concealed in a studio beneath the stage to ensure the finest amplified sound combines with the superlative singing of the cast. With the singers discreetly miked, the recorded sound is presented here in superb quality. Emma Matthews is continually being garnered with praise - ‘Emma Matthews could inspire the dead, turning in one of the finest readings of this role I’ve ever heard’ (International Record Review on Rigoletto), ‘As Gilda, Emma Matthews is outstanding’ (Opera Now on Rigoletto) – and doesn’t disappoint. Includes a glittering Swarovski chandelier illuminating the stage and fireworks decorating Sydney Harbour’s sky-line, which render this production as something truly spectacular. “Emma Matthews's Violetta is exuberant and breathtakingly accurate...she has nothing to fear from close scrutiny and amid what must have been considerable challenges she feels free enough to wow the audience.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2013 “At times it’s very impressive to look at, at times it’s hackneyed to the point of cliché, but you just might enjoy it, especially if you know Sydney...Matthews is a very effective Violetta. She uses her lyrical voice to great effect, singing with ringing intensity and a good deal of beauty, pinging out the high notes and never showing any discomfort. She also manages to change the colour of her voice most effectively for the final act.” MusicWeb International, December 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Originally set during Sicily’s 13th-century uprising against French rule, in Christof Loy’s staging for the Netherlands Opera the action is transposed to a 1940s world of sudden violence and shadowy double-dealing. Imaginatively cast and idiomatically conducted, the performance presents this magnificent score in its entirety, including the allegorical ballet The Four Seasons. The lovers sing tenderly; but what stands out in their Act 2 duet is some exquisite phrasing in the strings...There are a few cuts, including the cabaletta of Procida's 'Et toi, Palerme', but it's a worthwhile addition to the modest number of French grand operas on DVD.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011 “Barbara Haveman floats fine pianissimi but she is significantly underpowered as Helene...One of the handsomest baritones of the moment, Alejandro Marco-Buhrmester works hard and with notable intelligence, but his Montfort is tonally too lean for the music...The Netherlands Opera Chorus...remains one of the most musically and dramatically responsive among major companies.” International Record Review, November 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | A production of the Opéra national de Paris in coproduction with l’Opéra de Novosibirsk, filmed in HD Opéra Bastille, 04/2009
Stage direction, set and costume design Dmitri Tcherniakov After public and critical acclaim for his Eugene Onegin (also from BelAir), Macbeth is the latest production from Russian stage director Dmitri Tcherniakov, recorded at the Paris Opera. Coproduced with Siberia’s Novosibirsk Opera, this new Macbeth uses cutting-edge multimedia technology to give the viewer a fresh perspective on the work. Google Earth satellite images plunge us into the heart of the action: a gloomy square surrounded by soulless buildings and the interior of an aristocratic residence. Witches are no more a part of Tcherniakov’s Macbeth than the duel was of his Onegin, but once again the atmosphere is one of brooding claustrophobia. Tcherniakov has chosen a great cast, beginning with the marvellous Lithuanian soprano Violeta Urmana as Lady Macbeth. Greek baritone Dimitris Tiliakos is a powerful presence as Macbeth, while the Italians Ferruccio Furlanetto and Stefano Secco are sumptuous as, respectively, Banquo and Macduff. In this, his second production at the Paris Opera, Teodor Currentzis, music director of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, conducts with verve and theatricality. opera: 161’ Subtitles: Fr, Eng, Ger, Spa, It Bonus: Novosibirsk to Paris 33’ Colour 1080i HD, 16/9 • PCM Stereo, DTS HD Master Audio “I found Dmitri Tcherniakov’s translation of Verdi’s Macbeth to a modern housing estate run by the Russian mafia intriguing and suggestive, if not altogether persuasive. But if you want a conventional kilts-and-sporran approach, look elsewhere.” The Telegraph, 2nd December 2011 “Personal relationships are illuminatingly handled in spite of Tcherniakov's aversion to monologues. Home viewing produces, I guess, a more accessible experience than the audience had in Paris's acoustically unfriendly Bastille auditorium. In film close-up, for instance, the wonderfully detailed acting of baritone Dimitris Tiliakos, a darkly handsome hero-villain, stands out” BBC Music Magazine, August 2011 *** “Currentzis brings vitality to the performance, with important contrasts within scenes, and works well with the singers. Of them, Tiliakos greatly impressed me by his creation of a multi-dimensional character and in both his singing and his acting...This is indeed a telling portrayal of a man mentally disintegrating. He possess a wide range of dynamics, of shades and of nuancing, all well controlled.” International Record Review, July/August 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

| | | Recorded live at The Royal Opera House, 13 June, 2011
Black, red, cream and gold are the colours that define Phyllida Lloyd’s Royal Opera House staging of Verdi’s robust, yet penetrating setting of Shakespeare’s Scottish play. Manipulated by a whole coven of cunning, scarlet-turbanned witches, the characters often evoke figures in a splendid Gothic fresco. With Simon Keenlyside making his British role-debut, as an athletic, brooding Macbeth and Liudmyla Monastyrska as his Lady, both imperious and subtle, this performance, masterfully conducted by Antonio Pappano, goes far beyond mere sound and fury. This production went out LIVE to cinema screens around the world. …an impressive company showcase, full of moments when chorus and orchestra are at full throttle. Whipped up by Antonio Pappano's baton, they sound truly thrilling.’ The Guardian Extra features: Cast gallery Interviews with Simon Keenlyside, Raymond Aceto and Liudmyla Monastyrska Rehearsing Macbeth with Antonio Pappano Running time 170 mins Region Code All regions Picture format 1080i High Definition / 16:9 Sound format 2.0LPCM + 5.1(5.0) DTS Menu languages EN Subtitles EN/FR/DE/IT/ES “Lloyd's Covent Garden staging of Verdi's opera has a good deal going for it; there's plenty of atmosphere in Anthony Ward's aptly dark-toned sets...Keenlyside sings the title role with imagination and insight, even if his lyric approach doesn't command the full cut and thrust of a true Verdi baritone...Pappano is an authoritative Verdian, punching the score out into the theatre.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2012 **** “you know that Keenlyside is an accomplished lieder-singer by the dramatic precision in this phrase readings throughout (his Act 4 aria has such emotional transparency he almost breaks your heart)...Monastyrska unleashes such pent-up venom with her sharp-edged vocalism that the total package is almost too psychologically repulsive...the production is wonderfully atmospheric...Pappano is the most important artistic catalyst” Gramophone Magazine, July 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Staged by Daniele Abbado Nabucco was Verdi’s third work for the stage and proved his first great success when performed in 1842. It deals with the Hebrew’s attempts to break free from the yoke of their Babylonian oppressors and is nowadays numbered among Verdi’s most popular works, not least on account of its famous Chorus of Hebrew Slaves, which has one of the best-loved melodies in the whole history of opera. Staged by Pier´Alli Oberto was the first of Verdi’s operas to be staged and was heard for the first time at La Scala, Milan, in November 1839. As a young and unknown composer, Verdi was subject to the rules then governing the opera industry in Italy. Even so, there are already many scenes in this early work that reveal unmistakable signs of the composer’s individual style. Bonus: Introduction to the opera Released for the first time on Blu-ray!
