Wagner’s Dream

Wagner’s Dream

This unique film takes us deep into the artistic and musical challenges of staging Wagner’s epic Ring cycle, as a spectacular and groundbreaking new production is created for The Metropolitan Opera, New York.

The stakes could not be higher as one of the theater's finest stage directors teams up with one of the world's leading opera companies to tackle opera's most monumental challenge. Robert Lepage’s visionary production – the most ambitious in the history of The Met - features a colossal set weighing 90,000-pounds (“The Machine”), designed to meet Wagner’s extraordinary theatrical demands.

An outstanding cast of opera stars including Bryn Terfel and Deborah Voigt are joined by newcomer Jay Hunter Morris, who dramatically steps into the hugely demanding role of the hero Siegfried just days before the production’s world premiere.

An intimate look at the challenges of live opera and the risks that must be taken, the film chronicles the creativity and unflagging determination behind this daring attempt to realize Wagner’s dream of a perfect Ring.

Chorus and Orchestra of Teatro Real, Madrid, Ivor Bolton (conductor) & Kasper Holten (director)

Read Katherine's exclusive interview with Kasper Holten about the production here.

Wagner’s rarely performed early comic opera, based on Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, enjoys its Spanish debut in a new production by director Kasper Holten. The lively score boasts clear Italian, French and Weberian influences that pre-date the composer’s mature voice, yet the music continually delights with the unmistakable emergence of Wagner’s precocious genius. His adaptation of the Bard’s play reflects the rebellious mood of a Revolutionary Germany, vindicating sensual love and attacking the fanatical repression of sexuality by a puritanical and hypocritical authority. Ivor Bolton conducts a vibrant cast featuring English baritone and Cardiff Singer of the World Lieder Prize-winner Christopher Maltman, Turkish-Viennese tenor and BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Ilker Arcayürek and Germany’s hottest Wagnerian leading lady, Manuela Uhl.

“It's well…performed here, especially by the splendidly full-voiced chorus.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2017 ***

“Filmed for DVD, Kasper Holten’s colourful production lifts the spirits and a hard-working cast is swept along” Financial Times, February 2017

“Musically, the cast is led by the ever-dependable Christopher Maltman, who gives a touch of magic to the rather archetypal figure of the wicked duke...The smaller soprano roles are well taken too, with María Miró proving a good foil to the heroically chaste Isabella. The finest heroes, however, are the orchestra, who play the score as though it were Meistersinger, sounding like gods right from the sparkling overture to the jolly resolution” MusicWeb International, 18th April 2017

“As a Das Liebsverbot virgin, I was keen to apply the old test: if this opera was by J. Soap rather than R. Wagner, how would we rate it? My personal verdict is ‘highly’. Young Richard concocted a cracking libretto…his score has verve, variety and several alluring examples of the soaring, extended melodies that mark out his special territory.” Opera, May 2017

“Weimar National Theatre opens a promising ‘Ring’ cycle with Wagner’s original ur-scene.” Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

Outside Germany, the name Weimar tends to evoke mixed feelings and pictures of German history of the last hundred years. Within Germany, Weimar means a town in the state of Thuringia arguably saturated with the “Deutsche Kultur” of the “Weimarer Klassik”, the legendary Bauhaus, and finally the life and work of Franz Liszt and his son in law Richard Wagner. In Weimar Richard Wagner began composing the fi rst part of his RING-cycle, “ Das Rheingold”. In 2008 the Nationaltheater Weimar started a new production of this unique tetralogy. The conductor is Carl St.Clair, a former student of Leonard Bernstein. With Michael Schulz’ fine and highly intelligent staging this new “Ring” production on DVD and Blu-Ray becomes an outstanding document of contemporary opera theatre.

La Fura dels Baus, famous for their opening ceremony of the Olympic games in Barcelona and opera stagings in Salzburg, Ruhrtriennale, etc., use in Rheingold 3D computer projections that evoke computer games, organic structures built of athletic performers that recall the "Cirque du soleil"

From Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Valencia, 2007.

Incl. world-class Wagner singers such as Salminen, Kapellmann, Mayer and promising young talents that include John Daszak (Loge) and Juha Uusitalo (Wotan), whom the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung hailed as a new "Number One among the opera gods."

“…this is the most exciting staging I've seen - slightly recalling Cirque du Soleil, perhaps, except that here the spectacle is wholly and intelligently at Wagner's service. Scenery combines dazzlingly mobile 3D computer projections on a towering cyclorama, with groups of acrobats. Inevitably some imagery works better than others; the harpyish Rhinemaidens, literally giving birth to the gold, are less compelling than the planetary descent to Nibelheim, or Walküre's opening wolf-chase and gleaming Tree, in which Wotan's ravens perch, and which scatters Siegmund's name like falling leaves. Against these amazing backgrounds the Gods, futuristically costumed, glide high above the stage on individual gantries propelled by 'invisible' stagehands... they're no barrier to keenly dramatic, involving performances from a fine cast, with some superb principals. ...it's all beautifully recorded on DVD - but on Blu-ray it's simply breathtaking, pin-sharp images and airy surround-sound drawing one into the Valencia stage with almost 3D effect. Wagner still responds best to Romantic imagery; but this redefines it on a cosmic scale. It's the finest Ring on video so far.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2010 *****

Orchestra of the Teatro alla Scala, Dancers of the Eastman Ballet Company Antwerp, Daniel Barenboim (conductor) & Guy Cassiers (stage director)

The La Scala Rheingold in May 2010 inaugurated Guy Cassiers Ring-Cycle and introduces a completely new paradigm to this work. While before him Patrice Chéreau had laid his focus on a historical analysis from 1870 to 1930 Germany, Guy Cassiers’ Ring unfolds “from our own present-day moment; it [takes] place in ‘the now’, the Jetztzeit (Walter Benjamin), placing our present and our future into the context of the promises and curses that we have inherited from history … The Cassiers Ring shows how the globalized moment of 2010 continues to build on the Wagnerian vocabularies of 1870.” (Michael Steinberg)

Cast with a number of opera stars like René Pape, Stephan Rügamer, Johannes Martin Kränzle and Anna Larsson and conducted by Daniel Barenboim, this Rheingold is bound to put the audience under its spell.

Chorus of The Netherlands Opera & Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Harmut Haenchen (conductor) & Martin Kušej (director)

Austrian director Martin Kušej's pioneering vision brings a challenging and provoking insight to Wagner’s opera of love and redemption, with his singular ability to connect characters and their actions to the score. Martin Zehetsgruber’s spacious, multi-layered sets define the settings through which Dalland (Robert Lloyd), Senta (Catherine Naglestad), The Dutchman (Juha Uusitalo) and the chorus move to great effect fulfilling the fine conducting of Hartmut Haenchen, who elicits from the orchestra an unmatchable performance of detail and clarity.

“I must give utmost praise to conductor Hartmut Haenchen, who offers a whip-smart account of the score...It never feels rushed but it does feel inexorable, with the orchestra playing with amazing transparency: one can hear Wagner's genius creating and growing....Haenchen manages Wagner's awkward mood/tempo changes as if they were organic...Uusitalo has found his ideal role in the Dutchman...He may be the finest Dutchman I've ever encountered.” International Record Review, July/August 2011

Recorded live at the Bayreuth Festival Theatre, July 2013

Samuel Youn (Der Holländer), Franz-Josef Selig (Daland), Ricarda Merbeth (Senta), Christa Mayer (Mary), Tomislav Muzek (Erik), Benjamin Bruns (Der Steuermann)

Bayreuth Festival Orchestra & Chorus, Christian Thielemann (conductor) & Jan Philipp Gloger (director)

Last year’s revival of Jan Philipp Gloger’s controversial 2012 production was greeted (as so often in Bayreuth) with huge acclaim. He translates the tale of the Dutchman, whose travails can only be redeemed through the unconditional love of a woman (Senta), to a future time, where part-human/part-cyborgs grind out an existence in a world completely subservient to business and commerce. In the modern fan-making factory, which replaces the world of Senta and her fellow seamstresses, we see a final tableau in which the Dutchman’s and Senta’s heavenly union is ‘commemorated’ by the factory workers now producing souvenir statuettes of the couple. The production stars Samuel Youn, Ricarda Merbeth, and Franz-Josef Selig, and is conducted by Christian Thielemann, arguably the greatest Wagnerian conductor of today.

“Kaufmann and Westbroek project the right kind of sexual and emotional intensity to carry the drama in the very bare setting that they're in, a tension matched elsewhere only by Waltraud Meier's masterclass of a Waltraute...Elsewhere there is solid singing from the 'baddie' basses...and much evidently enjoyed hard work from Deborah Voigt's Brünnhilde” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013

“For me the highlight of Daniel Barenboim's 1992 Bayreuth cycle is the matchless singing of John Tomlinson as Wotan, coupled with a radiant Brünnhilde from Anne Evans. Siegfried Jerusalem is movingly tender as Siegfried, and Philip Kang as Hagen is menacingly unsettling...Kupfer's production, with plentiful use of lasers, will not please everyone, but I think it's full of stunningly hypnotic imagery that blends beautifully with Wagner's music.” James Longstaffe, Presto Classical, March 2015
