| | | JS Bach: Violin Concertos BWV1041-1043
Gunar Letzbor, Daniel Sepec (violins) St. Florianer Sängerknaben, Kepler Konsort & Ars Antiqua Austria The ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria under the direction of the violinist Gunar Letzbor devote this double CD to Bach's instrumental and vocal works with reissued recordings originating from 1995 and 1996. CD 1 features the two Violin Concertos BWV1041 and 1042, with Letzbor as soloist, and the Double Violin concerto, in which Daniel Sepec takes on the equal role of second soloist. These works are augmented by Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, in which the concertino group includes not only solo violin but also two recorders, performed with great virtuosity and sinuous tone by Kees Boeke and Michael Oman. Bach’s arrangement of the Pergolesi 'Stabat Mater' known as Psalm 51 is seldom performed. Bach replaced Pergolesi’s text of the 'Stabat Mater' with the Lutheran translation of Psalm 51 and undertook a number of alterations to both vocal and instrumental parts. Bach attached great importance to the exact musical illustration of individual words of the text, producing an orchestral score with greater complexity and more heightened contrasts than the original Pergolesi. The special feature of this recording is the assignment of the St. Florianer Sängerknaben boys’ choir from which the excellent soloists have also been recruited. The CD also includes 'Himmelskönig, sei willkommen' in which the male vocal parts are sung by the Kepler Consort. | | | (also available to download from $21.00) | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. | | | Frederic Rosselet plays Bach, Berio, Dutilleux & Ligeti
Frederic Rosselet (cello) Swiss ‘cellist Frédéric Rosselet plays subtly and athletically. He is not a performer who shows off at every opportunity; his is a higher aesthetic. The technical prowess you will hear on this recording rivals the great virtuosi and his recording is on a grand scale. He uses this skill tastefully and reservedly. Frédéric plays two different 'cellos in this recording. A modern ‘cello, which he plays in the pieces by Berio, Ligeti and Dutilleux, made about 130 years ago by a student of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume. For the two Bach suites, Frédéric chose a glorious instrument configured as they would have been played in the Baroque era, without a peg, a lighter sound post on the interior of the instrument, gut strings and a Baroque bow. Frédéric took First Place in Bach Solo Strings Competition & Thornton Concerto Competition with the Lutoslawski ‘cello concerto. | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Gidon Kremer: Anniversary Box-Set
Bach, J S: | Partita for solo violin No. 1 in B minor, BWV1002 Partita for solo violin No. 2 in D minor, BWV1004 Partita for solo violin No. 3 in E major, BWV1006 | Mozart: | Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola & Orchestra in E flat major, K364 Serenade No. 6 in D major, K239 'Serenata Notturna' | Pärt: | Adagio (after Mozart) | Piazzólla: | Oblivion | Raskatov: | 5 Min. aus dem Leben von W.A.M. | Rozsa: | Theme and Variations for Violin, Cello & Orchestra, Op. 29a | Schnittke: | Stille Musik for violin and cello Moz-Art à la Haydn | Schubert: | String Quintet in C major, D956 |
DVD1: This DVD presents a very original program with hardly ever performed pieces and Kremer’s own version for string orchestra of Schubert famous Quintet which makes it particularly attractive. DVD2: It was in this spirit, that his fine young ensemble Kremerata Baltica presents music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart coupled with two contemporary works inspired by the great composer on this DVD. Recorded at the Salzburg Mozart Festival in 2002, the chamber orchestra, played Estonian Arvo Pärt’s “Mozart-Adagio” composed in the mid 1990s and “Moz-Art à la Haydn,” a humorous reflection on the two Austrian masters by Russian composer Alfred Schnittke. DVD3: His return to J. S. Bach’s partitas is a major event as Kremer’s first recording of these works was released almost a quarter of a century ago, and he hasn’t played the partitas in public for over twenty years. Those who have followed Gidon Kremer’s artistic development over the past 25 years will note how much his tone and articulation have changed.
For more than 40 years Gidon Kremer has been one of the world´s foremost violinists and - thanks to his insatiable curiosity and quest for new stimuli - one of today´s most intriguing musical personalities. In 1997 he gave himself a special present for his birthday: his own ensemble, made up of the best young musicians from the Baltic countries - his Kremerata Baltica. “For me it´s extremely important that I and my Kremerata Baltica identify with the music of our time.” This Edition is an outstanding example of his uncommonly extensive repertoire, featuring some of the greatest pieces ever composed from Bach to the whole new world of thrilling 20th century works. The repertoire was wide-ranging, and included three Spanish pieces by Sarasate, Nin and Ernesto Halffter, all delectably played, in his only recordings of them. He turned also to his own transcription of Bax’s Mediterranean as well as to staples such as Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling Flight of The Bumble-Bee. Throughout, Heifetz’s bowing, pizzicati, double stops, glissandi and inimitable portamenti grace these pieces with incredible freshness. Mark Obert-Thorn, reissue producer and audio restoration engineer “Puckish Mozart, dreaming Debussy, heartfelt Korngold, elegant Bach, sultry Falla: Heifetz the magician is on full display in these 1940s recordings.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 **** | | | (also available to download from $9.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. The celebration of the Nativity has always been a source of inspiration for composers. The different elements of the evangelical narrative evoke numerous images: tender feelings before the Baby Jesus; the gentleness of his mother, the Virgin Mary; the procession of the three Wise Men; the angelic choirs in Heaven; and these shepherds gathered in the manger. All that appears in the musical repertoire linked to this holiday, as well as the presence of colourful instrumentations and themes connected to folk traditions. This set, released by Ricercar, brings together all these elements, drawn from the repertoires of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
