| | | Bach: Cello Suites & Sonatas for Viola da Gamba
This new release brings you a well-filled 3-CD set for the price of two. The first two discs of this set feature a brand-new recording of Bach’s Cello Suites with the well-loved Russian cellist Karine Georgian. Karine considers this some of the most moving music ever written. She confesses that she has lived with the Suites and has played them in concert for many years and has always been in awe of their sublime beauty. It becomes evident from the very beginning of Suite No. 1 that Georgian brings to her playing a very special insight and deep understanding of these cello masterpieces. Karine Georgian’s inspiring and very impressive partner in this recording of the Gamba Sonatas is harpsichordist Gary Cooper. “…cello-playing at this level of natural elegance and love of life will always make the music sound great.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Grigory Sokolov - Live on ParisA film by Bruno Monsaingeon. Performance recorded on 4 November 2002
The only DVD of Grigory Sokolov, an exceptional artist, famously reclusive, is once again available. In the 40 years since the 16-year-old Sokolov was awarded first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1966, the world has been blessed with what one American critic recently called "a kind of pianism, musicianship and artistry one thought had vanished forever". Championed at a young age by Emil Gilels and a prominent figure on the Russian music scene since his early teens, Sokolov has gained an almost mythical status amongst music-lovers and pianophiles throughout the world. Sokolov has amazed everyone again and again with the enormous breadth of his repertoire and his huge, almost physical musical strength. Visa problems have again made Italy-based Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov cancel a London booking. After last year's Barbican concert was called off at short notice came the news that he would not be visiting the Royal Festival Hall on 29th April as planned. "Sokolov, although a well-kept secret, is for many the greatest pianist alive today. Youthful celebrities with fast fingers, designer gear and slick photos pall beside such gigantic artistry, for Sokolov is a pianistic Dostoyevsky, his music-making vast in scope, visionary and revelatory, squeezing out every last drop of meaning." Jessica Duchen, International Piano Sept/Oct 2006 "There can be few virtuosi with fingers to touch his" The Sunday Times Region Code: NTSC 0 Picture Format: NTSC 16:9 Sound Format: PCM-STEREO Disc Format: DVD9 No of Discs: 1 Run Time: 123 mins Released: 2009-06-01 “The elusive Sokolov is sensitively filmed.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2010 **** “…Monsaingeon has resisted the obvious temptation to be too interventionist. Limiting the number of different angles at which we survey Sokolov's phenomenal pianism to a bare minimum certainly enables the viewer to be hypnotically drawn into the performances which in themselves are pretty remarkable.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 ***** “…Sokolov, a bulky, impassive figure, is fascinating to watch, playing as he does with dangerously high hand movements and expressive gestures. Three Beethoven sonatas are played in an uninterrupted sequence with such beauty of tone, sculptured phrasing and cohesive narrative that criticism is silenced. ...Prokofiev's Seventh Sonata, a coruscating, vehement reading that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Unmissable for all pianophiles.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Stabat Mater
This disc features beautiful and moving works reflecting on the grief of the Virgin Mary written by great Vivaldi, Pergolesi and Bach. Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater dates from around 1711 or 1712 and he used just the first ten verses of the text, creating one of the most sombre of all settings. Bach’s adaptation of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater uses a contemporary German version of the Biblical Psalm 51. To suit the requirements of the new text Bach made certain alterations to Pergolesi’s vocal parts but retained the scheme of solo arias and duets between a soprano and an alto voice. He also added a new, independent viola part to the score and rewrote the basso continuo, giving the work a new harmonic vitality. Pergolesi’s Salve Regina, composed around the same time as the Stabat Mater, and of a similarly expressive, sorrowful style. Of Pergolesi’s two settings of the text, the present one – originally in C minor – is the most well-known, and is here performed in the F minor version for alto voice. Daniel Taylor directs the Theatre of Early Music as well as performing himself - “The beauty of his voice will stop you in your tracks.” Gramophone “Emma Kirkby at her most serene is matched by Taylor as if they were two faces of a single musical entity. With first-rate surround-sound recording and a warm ambience, this is a disc not to be missed.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2009 ***** “There are at least half a dozen recordings of Vivaldi's Stabat mater that I wouldn’t want to be without but this profoundly beautiful version leaps straight into their ranks. The Theatre of Early Music band is small (just single strings and simple continuo) but its playing never feels underweight, and rhetorical qualities in the music are clear yet unforced. ...Taylor's intelligent and stylish singing belongs in a select class alongside a few of the finest and sweetest voices of its type. ...the well chosen programme is rounded off by Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden (Bach's creative yet respectful adaptation of Pergolesi's Stabat mater, using the text of Psalm 51), in which Emma Kirkby's delicate singing elegantly blends with Taylor's.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2009 “Anyone looking for a musical and sensitive reading of the Vivaldi, or an interesting variation on the Pergolesi; any fan of either of the two soloists; or any audiophile should get hold of this wonderful disc as soon as possible.” Opera Britannia, 28th September 2009 ****/***** | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Bach - 6 Concertos after Vivaldi & Italian Concerto
French harpsichordist Olivier Baumont has distinguished himself as a performer and scholar, specializing in French Baroque repertoire. He took up the harpsichord without learning piano first, sharing his family's love for French history of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He studied with Kenneth Gilbert and Huguette Dreyfus and worked with Gustav Leonhardt in his master classes in Cologne. He was awarded first prize in harpsichord (1981) and in chamber music (1982) at the Paris Conservatory and won the Concours de Solistes de Radio France in 1982. He frequently performs at music festivals in Europe, England, and the United States, and has toured widely. Since 1992, he has directed the Festival Couperin at Chaumes-en-Brie. In September, 2001, Baumont became professor of harpsichord at the Paris Conservatory. He is the author of a biography of François Couperin, has edited harpsichord works by Michel Corrette and Jacques Duphly, and has contributed scholarly articles to numerous musicological journals. “Bach taught himself the Italian style with these arrangements of Vivaldi violin concertos. One track of strangely erratic tempos (an ill-advised collation of two 'takes' perhaps?) then lively allegros and lyrical aria-like largo movements.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2010 *** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
