| | | Baroque Cello - Illuminations
Angela East (baroque cello) with Ruth Alford (baroque Cello) & Howard Beach (harpsichord) “The pieces on this CD have been brought together because they are commonly taught to cello students during the early years of their training. Few artists have considered recording these works as they remember them to be rather simple. Played with imagination, in baroque style and with a baroque cello however, these pieces assume a completely different dimension. I hope that you will be inspired and get much pleasure from listening to these stars of the baroque cello repertoire.” Angela East “Angela East's… brings to these suites and sonatas an uninhibited expressive style and a determination to present the character of each movement in the strongest, most searching light.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Bach - Cantatas Volume 43
Three Christmas cantatas from 1725 make up the programme of the 43rd volume in Masaaki Suzuki’s and Bach Collegium Japan’s highly praised cycle of Bach’s cantatas. “Bach Collegium Japan responds magnificently to such diversity of expression and contrasting forces. Peter Kooij is particularly striking… He's fearsome in the rattling concitato of the 'battle aria' (BWV 57) in which Jesus assures the Soul the 'Yes, I can smite the enemies...'” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 **** “From the outset, the Bach Collegium Japan deliver these 1725 Christmas pieces with supreme vitality and exuberance. …Blažíková projects a penetrating radiance with admirable focus and impeccable tuning in "Ich wunschte mir den Tod"… a fine addition to Suzuki's distinguished series.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2009 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. 2 discs for the price of 1 Hyperion’s Bach piano transcription series, which has done so much to illustrate the unique effect of Bach on the nineteenth-century mind, has reached volume 7 with the complete transcriptions by Max Reger. Reger was described by his contemporaries as ‘the modern-day Bach’, partly because of his frequent use of fugue and other characteristic forms. His skills as a pianist were matched by his abilities as an organist—a situation that influenced his a profound understanding of Bach’s counterpoint. Therefore it is fascinating to see the composer’s direct response to his predecessor. In the young German virtuoso Markus Becker we have the ideal performer: he has already recorded the complete original piano works of Reger. As Francis Pott writes in his comprehensive booklet notes: ‘In adopting a balance of linear and polyphonic clarity with the full expressive resources of the piano and of virtuoso technique, Markus Becker respects the historic significance both of Bach’s original inspirations and of Reger’s transcriptions as documents of their own time’. “Markus Becker is a heroic exponent of this obscure yet satisfying repertoire, less 'pianistic' than the contemporary Bach-Busoni arrangements yet setting the performer equal if not greater challenges. A fascinating addition to Hyperion's series of Bach transcriptions.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2009 **** “Das alte Jahr vergangen ist, BWV614, is slow and thoughtful, yet is made serenely beautiful in Becker's glowing performance. …the D minor Toccata and Fugue… is superbly articulated and full of colour, while we can hear the "organ effect" from the piano's sustaining pedal, generously applied. The result is just fascinating, and I do recommend you to try this collection. It really is rewarding.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2009 “On each disc, a group of chorale preludes (16 altogether) is bookended by mighty preludes and fugues: in D, E flat (St Anne), E minor (The Wedge), and the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, sounding pleasantly free of bombast.” Sunday Times, 31st May 2009 *** “Even though he is always meticulous at reimagining the sonorities in strictly pianistic terms, Reger's transcriptions are generally far more sober than the [Busoni's], especially in the chorale preludes which make up the bulk of both of these discs.” The Guardian, 10th July 2009 ** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Andrea Bacchetti plays Bach
Bach, J S: | Two-part Inventions Nos. 1-15, BWV772-786 Three-part Inventions (Sinfonias) Nos. 1-15, BWV787-801 French Suite No. 6 in E major, BWV817 Partita No. 2 in C minor, BWV826 Six Little Preludes, BWV933-938 Five Little Preludes, BWV939-943 Prelude in C minor, BWV999 Nine Little Preludes, BWV924-930 Prelude in A minor, BWV931 Fughetta in C minor, BWV961 Fugue in C major, BWV952 Fugue in C major, BWV953 Prelude & Fughetta in G major, BWV902 Prelude & Fughetta in D minor, BWV899 Prelude & Fughetta in E minor, BWV900 Prelude & Fugue in A minor, BWV895 |
This double-CD release offers some rare recordings (especially the Praeludien mit Fughetten on CD 2) played by one of Italy’s most talented and acclaimed pianists. “Bacchetti’s style is unconventional but never iconoclastic . . . It marries a profound musical instinct with a keen and well-informed intellect, and an approach to the instrument . . . Which makes many of his colleagues seem like crude beginners. . . . He may thus never have the career he so richly deserves, but deserve it he most emphatically does” Piano Magazine “All fascinating stuff, impeccably recorded and a most enjoyable release” American Record Guide, October 2009 “There are some very fine Bach keyboard players around, but I find his highly individual style uniquely enjoyable and uplifting. Bacchetti's way of playing is hard to characterise, and impossible to in a single word. He is supremely concerned to articulate every voice, but that doesn't mean that his playing is didactic” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 ***** “More than two-and-a-half hours of Bach's solo keyboard music, sensitively played by Andrea Bacchetti…” Classic FM Magazine “Bacchetti allows his luminous sonority to soar without pressure or fuss” Gramophone Magazine, October 2009 “Andrea Bacchetti is a pianist at home across the whole extent of the piano literature, with his Bach playing well able to rank alongside the finest present-day exponents” International Piano, September/October 2009 “Andrea Bacchetti's playing of Bach is fluid, fluent, flexible and mellifluous” International Record Review, September 2009 “Beautiful atmosphere and legato playing are again aspects of Bacchetti’s playing which bring me back every time” Donny Clements, MusicWeb International, September 2009 “[Bacchetti] plays them with spontaneous freshness and plenty of expressive life, and these two discs make very appealing listening.” Penguin Guide “Intensely personal, musically discriminating at a very high level, highly sophisticated pianistically” Piano, September 2009 BBC Music Magazine

M. Hess) Recorded on 5th April 1939, in New York | Beethoven: | Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31 No. 2 'Tempest' Recorded on 13th March 1931, in Westminster Central Hall, London Bagatelle in E flat major, Op. 33 No. 1 Recorded on 11th August 1938, in Westminster Central Hall, London |
Walter Gieseking’s interpretations of Bach in the early years of his career gained him laurels for “his control over shades of tone, especially over infinite gradations in the range between piano and pianissimo, the clear definition of his agile finger-work, and the firm outlines of his rhythm and phrasing… This style, so lucid and so rhythmical, is the perfect vehicle for Bach’s keyboard music”. Gieseking’s 1931 account of Beethoven’s ‘Tempest’ Sonata also won him contemporary critical accolades: “Perfect playing matched with perfect recording. I know of no better interpretation of this sonata… a splendid achievement, one of the high water marks of piano recording”. “…Gieseking's Bach… has a peerless lightness, grace and natural beauty… In the Fifth Partita… Gieseking shows the most subtle virtuosity and is no less convincing in the Sixth Partita's more strenuous and concentrated demands.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2010 | | | (also available to download from $9.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Bach - Harpsichord Concertos
Bertrand Cuiller (harpsichord) Stradivaria, Daniel Cuiller Grave or jubilant, sombre or radiant, Bach's harpsichord concertos constitute the most accomplished form of the solo concerto before Mozart's great works for piano and orchestra, written almost half a century later. “This is an outstanding recital of Bach chamber-music playing in which four concertos (Stradivaria could have fitted in one more, in truth) bask in their own colours with a rare combination of infectious energy, quicksilver alertness among a single-string ensemble and not a hint of the affectedness which has blighted so many performances of these works in recent years. ...nothing can detract from the thoughtfulness, personality and fun which radiate from this wonderful recital.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
