Bach - Cantatas Volume 40

Bach - Cantatas Volume 40

Bach, J S:

Cantata BWV137 'Lobe den Herrn, den mächtigen König der Ehren'

Cantata BWV168 'Tue Rechnung! Donnerwort'

Cantata BWV79 'Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild'

Cantata BWV164 'Ihr, die ihr euch von Christo nennet'

Yukari Nonoshita (soprano), Robin Blaze (counter-tenor), Makoto Sakurada (tenor) & Peter Kooij (bass)

Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki

Although Bach did not compose many cantatas during the year 1725, the four cantatas that he did compose are far from being routine affairs. Lobe den Herren (Praise to the Lord), BWV 137, is a case in point: in it Bach includes the original text of the famous hymn, and also uses the familiar melody in all five movements to a greater or lesser degree. To impose such limitations must have been a challenge to himself as a composer, and the imagination and technical skill with which he fulfilled his task are striking.

“Where Collegium Musicum Japan scores is in the reflective gestures of pieces like Ihr, die jhr euch Christo nennet, with its conceits on the burden of guilt for each individual who passes the distressed traveller.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2008

“…Suzuki's instrumentalists are fast becoming the stars of the series, their obligato playing often in danger of eclipsing the singers whose arias they gild so tellingly. …Robin Blaze exudes radiance in the alto aria of BWV 137 while Peter Kooij is magisterial against the lively instrumental bluster at the beginning of BWV 168.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2008 ****

“Jochum's memorable, dedicated (1980) performance, marked by resilient rhythms, remains among the most completely satisfying versions even today. The choral singing - by far the most important element in this work - is superb and, though the soloists are variably balanced, they make a fine, clear-voiced team.” Penguin Guide, 2010 ***

The English Concert, Harry Bicket

It has been a several years since David Daniels’ last recital for Virgin Classics – in 2004 the renowned countertenor explored Berlioz’ Les Nuits d’Eté - and his most recent recital of Baroque works, the critically acclaimed Oratorio Arias by Handel, dates back to 2002.

For this new release, Daniels returns to sacred works of the Baroque era with this programme of sacred arias and cantatas by Bach. He lends his beautiful countertenor voice and immense musicianship to this programme of famous cantatas, namely “Ich habe genug”, and arias from Bach’s Mass in B minor and the Saint Matthew’s and Saint John’s Passions. The programme was recorded in London in September 2007.

Accompanying David Daniels, Harry Bicket conducts The English Concert, considered to be one of the finest chamber orchestras for interpretations of Baroque and Classical music. Harry Bicket, the ensemble’s new musical director, is renowned worldwide for his performances of Baroque opera with many of the leading singers of the age, and forthcoming TEC seasons will include exciting collaborations with Sara Mingardo, Jonathan Lemalu, David Daniels, Anna-Caterina Antonacci, Mark Padmore and others.

“Countertenor David Daniels is the most electrifying singer of the present day, with a voice of matchless beauty at the service of the finest musical sensibility.” BBC Music Magazine

“Countertenor David Daniels is a highly sensitive exponent - his voice pliant, ethereal, androgynous; responsive to the subtlest nuances of text and phrase, if occasionally over-indulgent in his use of vibrato for expressive effect.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2008 ****

“David Daniels is the ultimate in theatrical immediacy and a soaring, visceral and open-throated emotionalism.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2008

“What other voice could glide so prayerfully, so cleanly, in the Agnus Dei from the B Minor Mass? As for the lengthy sleep aria from Ich habe genug (a cantata usually assigned to the bass voice), Daniels is the lullaby king, soft and gracious to a nicety. Heavenly stuff, in its way, especially considered moment by moment. The trouble lies more in the singing’s cumulative effect, and the dawning of the CD’s biggest vice: lack of variety. Though Bach can be a majestic musical dramatist, the gear-changes in Daniels’s pick of arias from the Mass, the two Passions and three cantatas are relatively small – subtle gradations of faith, hope and charity. What’s more, there are no chorales or choruses, Bach’s music of the people, to offer a different vocal perspective. Beautiful musicianship is displayed throughout. But the end product remains frustrating: a Bach CD that feels overly lofty and precious, drained of too much blood.” The Times, 22nd August 2008 ***

The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, Brüggen-Consort & Leonhardt-Consort, Gustav Leonhardt

“Gustav Leonhardt's patrician demeanour and Calvinistic refusal to indulge his ego run contrary to the common trend for keyboard players to emulate performing seals. And yet he has the power to transfix an audience, as he did throughout his Wigmore Hall recital, without the need for gratuitous showmanship or wild musical gestures. Austerity and sobriety are the names of his particular performing game, tempered by a compelling mix of passion and commitment to the broad repertoire within his command.” Andrew Stewart, The Independent, 10th January 1996

“Among the scholar-performers who have sparked and led the early music revival, surely none has played a greater part and exerted a more benificent influence on younger musicians and the public than Gustav Leonhardt. Harpsichordist, organist, conductor, teacher, musicologist and editor are all roles in which he has distinguished himself.” Howard Schott, The Musical Times, October 1992

Martha Argerich is one of Deutsche Grammophon’s most charismatic artists. Her recordings have been in the catalogue for more than 40 years. Many – like her Debut Recital of 1960 and her Chopin Preludes of 1977– are still bestsellers.

In the 1990s DG released the successful Martha Argerich Collection on 11 CDs. Now we are bringing out a completely revamped concept of the Collection, starting with the 8 solo LPs she made for DG between 1960 and 1983. These were among the most celebrated recordings of their time – each one a revelation of this unique artist’s genius. Here, for the first time, they have been brought together in one box-set, in chronological order, as originally programmed, with original LP-cover artwork on the individual CD sleeves, and all-new liner notes (by Jed Distler), plus some rare photos (including an unpublished one of Ms. Argerich with Friedrich Gulda in Vienna, 1955). The recordings are essential listening – especially since they have been newly remastered for this edition, with optimal sound quality. For those who know and love these recordings, this is the edition to have.

This box will be followed up by two further boxes to include Martha Argerich’s Concerto and Chamber Ensemble recordings for Deutsche Grammophon (2009).

Sonia Wieder-Atherton (cello) & Imogen Cooper (piano)

“A perceived similarity between a theme in Bach's Art of Fugue and the opening of Brahm's first cello sonata led Sonia Wieder-Atherton and Imogen Cooper to experiment with musical relationships, arranging movements from Bach cantatas as punctuation marks between three Brahms sonatas. This unconvincing contrivance fails on many levels. It leaves the listener wanting more Bach while the Brahms sonatas - splendidly played, particularly in the turbulent outer movements - seem almost an interruption rather than an extension of a musical idea.” The Observer, 3rd August 2008

“Here are two performers of one mind musically. Their interpretations of all three Bahms Sonatas are beautifully paced, distinctively shaped and detailed. Cooper's reading of Kurtág's arrangement of Bach's BWV106 'Actus tragicus' is a haunting gem.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 ****

“[In the] Brahms's cello sonatas… Sonia Weider-Atherton and Imogen Cooper… hold the tension for the very soft, near nostalgic beauty of the E major coda, as they do for the many bars of pianissimo writing in the last movement of the Second Sonata. Not since Mstislav Rostropovich and Rudolf Serkin have these works been interpreted with such compulsive acuity... The Bach transcriptions are persuasive. ...Cooper steals this particular show in a meltingly moving re-creation of the Sonatina from Cantata No 106 that ought to be played first and last.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2008

Hilary Hahn (violin)

A 5 CD collection of world renowned violinist Hilary Hahn’s greatest recordings.

One of the most celebrated violinists of her generation, Hilary Hahn released her debut album at the tender age of 17 to great critical acclaim. Still only 28 years old, it is hard to believe the accolades she has already received, which include a Grammy Award and several nominations, and the large number of albums she has recorded.

Gli Angeli Geneve, Stephan MacLeod

German baroque cantatas performed by Geneva-based early music ensemble Gli Angeli Genève under the baton of Stephan MacLeod. Gli Angeli Genève specialises in 17th and 18th century chamber music. The Bruhns and Telemann cantatas are rarely heard or recorded.

Booklet includes full texts which are also available in PDF format by inserting the CD into a PC or Mac

“…Gli Angeli Genève have assembled five magnificent cantatas from contrasting 17th- and 18th-century North German lineages. Telemann's Funeral Cantata is perhaps the greatest surprise for its remarkably affecting text-setting, lightness of touch in its scoring and supreme attention to detail... Gli Angeli's... account reaches the heights in the concluding chorus (is this and the preceding soprano aria as Bachian as Telemann gets?) with that master of the oboe, Marcel Ponseele, as beguiling as ever.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2008
