Susi Sánchez, Narrator (María Sabina), Ángel Sáiz, Narrator (The Town Crier/Constable), Fernando Tejedor, Narrator (Executioner) & Carlos Hipólito, Narrator Orchestra and Chorus of the Comunidad de Madrid, José Ramón Encinar The Barcelona-born composer Leonardo Balada is credited with pioneering a blending of ethnic music with avant-garde techniques. The symphonic tragedy María Sabina, one of Balada’s bestknown works, tells the extraordinary story of Sabina, a Mexican Indian mushroom-cult priestess who meets fierce resistance from her people when endeavouring to open the holy rituals to the outside world. Some of the text in Balada’s work is based on her incantations, of which the composer has written, “While composing the work, the power of the text was so extraordinary that I felt inspired by it. I recall composing the music even when I was travelling, in airports or hotels”. The cantata Dionisio: In Memoriam is a homage to Dionisio Ridruejo, a poet and politician from Soria, Spain, on whose ideological, philosophical and descriptive writings the work is based. “The devotion of the performers is visceral and intense. José Ramón Encinar leads the Orchestra of the Comunidad de Madrid with fearless abandon. The orchestra doesn’t merely navigate the thickets of notes, they play them with frightening commitment.” MusicWeb International | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Andres Cardenes (violin) Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra, Matthias Aeschbacher "Leonardo Balada (b. 1933) is a contemporary Spanish composer heavily influenced by native Catalan folk music who also manages to transcend the imposing presence and influence of his countryman Manuel de Falla. Witness the extraordinary Violin Concerto of 1982, most of whose 26 minutes is devoted to the pyrotechnics of the soloist, in this case Andres Cardenes, whose skill easily matches the temperament of this beautiful--and decidedly original--work. Folk Dreams shows influences that range beyond Spain's borders--Latvia and Ireland, to be specific. The Latvian melody, called "Line and Thunder", is particularly striking. Sardana of 1979 evokes more of a western Mediterranean mood than a specifically Spanish one, with all sorts of playfully shrill violins and dance motifs. Flamenco rhythms inform the Fantasias Sonoras (1987), which is something of a concerto for orchestra that highlights not only each instrument and orchestral section but also Balada's ear for common melodies and his ability to incorporate them in a wide range of rhythmic structures. The Barcelona Symphony Orchestra takes to this music quite well and the sound quality--typical for Naxos these days--is rich and full. Give this one a listen."
