In 2001, Zig-Zag Territoires had already perceived the singularity as well as the potential of this ensemble, which had just won the Bordeaux International Quartet Competition. That first encounter had resulted in a very fine disc devoted to the quartets of Janaček, widely hailed by the critics (Diapason d’Or). In the ensuing eleven years, the Belcea Quartet built up a large repertoire and initiated a discography with our colleagues at EMI that attracted considerable attention. Thus this is a particularly propitious moment to implement a new, confident, long-term partnership between Belcea and ZZT. This collaboration is beginning with a complete recording of the Beethoven Quartets, a founding cycle if ever there was one. The Belcea Quartet began a worldwide tour focussing on this cycle that will continue through the end of the 2012-13 season. The second volume will follow in 2013. “Tuning remains pristine throughout...Faultless and unsettling.” The Independent, 11th November 2012 ***** “I'm particularly impressed by the Belcea's close attention to dynamics...Their playing may have a very different sound from the string quartets of Beethoven's day but the way the music breathes and moves gives a clear picture of his intentions...this promises to be an outstanding set - not the last word on these endlessly fascinating works, perhaps, but performances of great artistry and perception.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013 “They play with extraordinary strenuousness, very unlike the Alban Berg Quartet with whom they studied. The Belceas re-enact the creative torments of the composer to a degree where you feel their instruments might suffer...the magnificent cellist Antoine Lederlin cultivates a roudned tone, even under pressure, but the overall effect is of a lean, muscular sound” BBC Music Magazine, February 2013 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Beethoven: Complete Piano Trios Volume 2
Following on from their critically acclaimed Beethoven Piano Trios Volume 1, Somm is delighted to present Volume 2 performed by the Gould Piano Trio. The disc includes Piano Trio in Eb Major WoO 38, Piano Trio in C Minor Op 1 No 3 and the Piano Trio in Eb Major Op 70 No. 2. “warmly played by the Gould Trio, who are particularly sensitive to the lyrical minuet-like third movement of [Op. 70 No. 2]...the Goudl Trio's playing is unfailingly musical...All fine performances, in first-class sound.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2013 **** “The charm of WoO38 is persuasively conveyed, with the group playing up thje work's galant origins. Their conversational ease in the opening movement works well...There are more dramatic readings of these works around but these performances are unfailingly musicianly” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013 “The Gould Piano Trio, established players in this repertoire, prove masterly: nimble, agile and intense.” The Observer, 2nd December 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Arrau in Boston: Beethoven Piano Concertos Nos. 4 & 5
The two performances in this disc were given with Charles Munch in 1961 (in No.4) and Pierre Monteux (in No. 5) in 1960, both with the Boston Symphony. Both performances demonstrate collaborative assurance. “Arrau’s credentials as a Beethoven interpreter are second to none...the hard tone of the piano, on this live recording from Tanglewood (1961), is inimical to the lyrical No 4, and the eloquence of Arrau’s left hand is heard to beautiful effect in the finale’s magical second theme, but the Emperor fares better; again, the orchestra, now under Monteux, is on incisive form.” Sunday Times, 25th November 2012 “Arrau at his most direct and committed, with any hints of earthbound stolidity transfigured by the pianist's warm tone and the Boston Symphony's joyful playing.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 ***** “[in the Emperor] we have two vastly experienced musicians, both of whom have a deep understanding of the music and a determination to put their skills completely at the service of the music...There are several studio recordings of both concertos by Arrau but notwithstanding that this disc is an impressive and important addition to his discography.” MusicWeb International, 13th May 2013 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Claudio Arrau in Recital
There have been few pianists of Arrau’s range and stature, and these invaluable live recordings can only reaffirm memories of another time, another place, where sheer musical calibre and quality counted above all. Liner notes written by Bryce Morrison. Previously unissued; released by permission of the Arrau Estate “Live recordings from Arrau's prime, reflecting what made his playing great as well as its occasional shortcomings. Visionary Beethoven, bewitching Brahms and unusually grave Schumann.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2013 **** | | | (also available to download from $28.00) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Recordings were made of Szymon Goldberg (1909-1993) over virtually a 60-year period. It must have been one of the longest studio careers of any violinist, it was certainly one of the most consistent in quality. The present set gathers up all the 78rpm material, which itself covers some two decades and presents the violinist in repertoire to which he did not return in later years, such as string quartets, string trios and string duos. An earlier volume (Music & Arts CD-1223, 8 CDs) presented Goldberg’s best live recordings. | | | (also available to download from $55.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
