Annemarie Kremer (soprano), Wilke te Brummelstroete (alto), Marcel Reijans (tenor) & Geert Smits (baritone) Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, Jan Willem de Vriend This is the fifth and final volume in a cycle of the complete symphonies of Beethoven being released by conductor Jan Willem de Vriend and the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. The new disc features the composer’s 9th Symphony known as the “Choral”, and as with previous recordings in the series it is being made available as a hybrid SACD. Jan Willem de Vriend is the artistic director of Combattimento Consort Amsterdam and since 2006 has been the chief conductor and artistic director of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. De Vriend has been a guest conductor with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hague Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra is based in province of Overijssel with performs concert series in Enschede, Hengelo, Zwolle and Deventer. Written in 1824, the Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125, is Beethoven’s final complete symphony. It has come to be known as the “Choral Symphony”, and is the first example of a major work of its type to incorporate voices. The words are sung during the final movement by four vocal soloists and a chorus. They were taken from the "Ode to Joy", a poem written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785 and revised in 1803, with additions made by the composer. “it's a considerable relief to turn to interpreters who respond first of all to the text in front of them...what one actually hears is a symphony composed in 1824 and not 1884...The adroit members of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra adapt themselves accordingly: to horns that parp and bustle, closer to the earth than Gardiner, say, but without the blaring insensitivity of Emmanuel Krivine's band...don't miss de Vriend.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2012 “Love or hate Jan Willem de Vriend’s performance, one of the things he is not afraid of doing is revealing every moment of this piece with sharp and spot-lit scrutiny...This is a tremendous and remarkably revealing performance” MusicWeb International, June 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Italy – A Musical Tour of Siena, Pisa and Nervi
The Places The Tuscan city of Siena has a long history and is the site of one of the earliest great Gothic churches of the region, instantly recognisable from the polychrome marble and sculptures of its façade. From Siena our tour goes to Pisa, where, inevitably, the famous leaning tower and its adjacent buildings are the centre of our attention. The tour ends with a visit to Nervi, a resort that is now part of the city of Genoa, and the Villa Luxoro, with its collections of objets d’art. The Music Music for the tour is by Beethoven, with his Piano Concerto No. 1, completed in 1795, and his first numbered Piano Sonata, one of a set of three, published in 1796 and dedicated to his teacher, Joseph Haydn. | | | Live Recording from The Deutsche Oper Berlin, 1962/1963
Set & Costumes by WILHELM REINKING The Deutsche Oper in Berlin had hardly opened on 24th September 1961 before it started preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary. How was that possible? Had it entered into some sort of time warp? That might indeed have been possible for a theatre that in the past had devoted itself to Richard Wagner’s works. But there was a simpler explanation: the Deutsche Oper Berlin had, in fact, originally opened on 7 November 1912 under the title of Deutsches Opernhaus. Thus it was Beethoven’s Fidelio that featured at the opening of the Deutsches Opernhaus in 1912 – and it was also chosen for the anniversary concert on 7th November 1962 that is documented in this DVD. The conductor of the Deutsche Oper orchestra was a man who had been personally involved in much of the former history of the opera house – Artur Rother. He had joined it in 1934 and in the 28 years leading up to the anniversary, Rother conducted no fewer than 66 premieres. The production was in the hands of theatre director Gustav Rudolf Sellner and his chief set designer Wilhelm Reinking. Special care was taken in selecting the cast for the anniversary performance. For the four main roles, singers were chosen who already had international experience but were still fresh and vigorous. Christa Ludwig, James King and Walter Berry would also come to be regarded by Metropolitan Opera as ideal interpreters of the two main roles – but not until 1966 and 1971 respectively and Josef Greindl’s Rocco was famous in Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Berlin. | | | Beethoven: Piano Trios Nos. 3 & 7
Trio Ex Aequo: Gerald Fauth (piano), Matthias Wollong (violin) & Matthias Moosdorf (cello) All the artists in this trio have earned plaudits. The cellist Matthias Moosdorf is the cellist in the Leipzig String Quartet. From the stately introductory phrases of the “Archduke” Trio to the brooding final notes of Beethoven’s early work, these interpretations have long sustained phrasing and tonal beauty. We look forward to future releases by this ensemble. | |

| | | Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5
The novelty on this recording is the partially complete early Piano Concerto in E flat WoO 4 by the teenage Beethoven. This is very a much the work of a talented youth learning his craft. We are securely in the world of the mideighteenth-century classical concerto, and the effort is neither a slavish copy of the typical concerto Beethoven would have heard in Bonn, nor is it anything world-changing. It is though, a diverting piece, bristling with all sorts of invention and many beautiful, tender moments that are quite remarkable in such a youthful enterprise. | | | Usually despatched in 8 - 10 working days. |
