The Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau (1903 - 1991) was at the height of his career, when he recorded this recital in 1070/1977. He was known for his interpretations of a vast repertoire spanning from the baroque to 20th-century composers, especially Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms and Debussy. He is considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. It has been said that the best way to enjoy Arrau’s records is to imagine yourself there in the concert hall while he is playing. Now, thanks to the Beethovenfest performances presented here, which were filmed in Bonn in 1970 and 1977, it becomes virtually possible for us to do just that. In these fine performances, Arrau appears to make the piano breathe and sing. One can only marvel at the depth of expression, spontaneity, sense of discovery and playfulness she brings to [the Beethoven]...Just when you think everyone is in top gear, the whole ensemble shifts up another notch - and then goes into overdrive. Thrilling stuff.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Beethoven - Symphonies Nos. 4 & 7
This item is the last volume in PentaTone’s acclaimed Beethoven cycle. “Herreweghe's expertise in period-style performance convinces totally: the orchestra sound is crisp and clean, with rattling, war-like timpani and tight-reined, yet decently weighty string sound...In terms of everything that matters - not just style and sonority, but also a true response to the music's endless riches of drama and invention - these performances are as close to definitive as you can get.” Classic FM Magazine, September 2011 ***** “the playing is good enough and the overall approach to both symphonies is quietly convincing...considerate balancing is a laudable attribute - in the Seventh's Allegretto Herreweghe is good at keeping melody and countermelody on equal terms” Gramophone Magazine, October 2011 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Beethoven: Septet & Sextet
These works in carefree serenade character develop wonderful melodies, featuring solo displays as well as exquisite combinations. Beethoven at his most effervescent: chamber music with philharmonic flair! “[The Sextet] sets off with a fresh tempo and good balance within an acoustic that is a little resonant. The Adagio, with a nice opening bassoon solo, is charmingly played, and the Minuet, though so marked, responds to the sense of hunting sounds when the horns allow the hint of an open-air bray to enter their tone. The final Rondo is chirpily played.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2011 “This is superb wind playing, absolutely ideal for this music, and the musical attributes are a joy...the result is a performance that every Beethovenian should hear.” International Record Review, July/August 2011 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
