| | | Beethoven - Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6
The previous recording on Sony Classical with the Chamber Orchestra of Basel under the direction of Giovanni Antonini, the founder of Il Giardino Armonico, has shown that the orchestra is capable of fine Beethoven interpretations. The orchestra and conductor were awarded the Echo Klassik prize in 2008 for their readings of the 3rd and 4th symphonies (88697192522) and are reunited here for this recording of symphonies 5 and 6. As with the previous recordings, preparation has been meticulous down to the last detail, including numerous concerts and rehearsals. These are studio recordings of the highest quality where Antonini’s sparkling musical energy and the highly-motivated orchestra combine forces to ensure an exciting journey through Beethoven’s sound world. “Intriguingly, Antonini’s Baselers emphasise lyricism in the Fifth and elemental drama in the Pastoral — a thrilling storm with thunderous, thwacking timpani rolls — but everything sounds new-minted here, with pristine period textures. Even if you know these works well, there is plenty to delight.” Sunday Times, 9th May 2010 “Giovanni Antonini is not the first early music exponent to venture into the Classical era and this pairing of Beethoven symphonies is notable for crispness and momentum.” The Telegraph, 4th June 2010 ** “Especially impressive is Antonini's sense of rhythm. These performances really swing...There is something of a pantheistic celebration about both these performances that offers and commands not just respect but rather a thrilling demand for your attention.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2010 “Antonini's Beethoven is predictably lithe and tangy, its uniqueness discernable. To the standard euphoria and exhilaration, he adds wonderment and gratitude.” The Independent, 15th August 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

| | | Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique
The Philharmonia Orchestra’s 2nd disc with Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen, shifts dramatically in tone from the first, exploring Berlioz’s evocative sonic dream Symphonie Fantastique, alongside Beethoven’s Leonore Overture. Since September 2008 Salonen has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra. In his first season in this role he devised and led City of Dreams, a nine-month exploration of the music and culture of Vienna between 1900 and 1935. The project, which presents the music of Mahler, Schoenberg, Zemlinsky and Berg in its social and historical context, has travelled to 18 cities across Europe, culminating in semi-staged performances of Berg’s Wozzeck, with Simon Keenlyside in the title role, in October 2009. “there's a passionate restraint about Salonen's readings that is far more telling than many more overtly histrionic versions...clearly prioritising musical imperatives over mere pictorialism, yet with no shortage of electricity in the air, either emotional or elemental.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2010 **** “The Philharmonia gives its all in a performance that relishes the manic contrasts in Berlioz's groundbreaking score as well as emphasising its symphonic sweep - as witness the March to the Scaffold, with its galvanising sense of inevitability.” Classic FM Magazine, November 2010 **** “In the symphony, Salonen gives the orchestra its head while balancing the textures meticulously...The mighty Leonore No 2 (the first composed) is an apt coupling...and it is played with immense force and eloquence.” Sunday Times, 20th June 2010 **** | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

| | | Live Recording From The Zurich Opera House, 2004
Set Design by Rolf Glittenberg Beethoven’s only opera Fidelio never ceases to fascinate audiences with its spellbinding story of true love. Staged by renowned opera director Jürgen Flimm this production is the outstanding result of the teamwork of the orchestra and chorus of the Zurich opera with a cast of magnificent singer-actors. Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund in the title role presents a wonderful portrayal of the opposing characters of the loving wife, Leonore, and her alter ego, the young man Fidelio. Jonas Kaufmann who has lately gained international fame is her counterpart Florestan – the attractive tenor plays a convincing suffering prisoner, brought back to life by marital love. László Polgár is the jailer, torn between greed and sympathy and Alfred Muff takes on the sinister Don Pizarro to complete the setting. Under the musical direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, this production became a highly memorable event. The Austrian conductor is universally celebrated for the structural transparency of his interpretations, his intellectual penetration and his emotional understanding of both music and opera plot. He once called this opera “a hymn of praise to marital love”. Although the work has a long tradition of being interpreted in political terms portraying oppression and liberation, imprisonment and freedom, Harnoncourt is adamant that, for Beethoven, these topics were only a means to an end: “What he was concerned about is love. The real action is between Leonora and Florestan. Essentially, the work is about what can be achieved by true love and the fact that a loving wife is ready to do anything for her husband.” Sound Format: PCM STEREO, DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 DVD Format: DVD 9, NTSC Picture Format: 16:9 Subtitle Languages: DE, GB, FR, ES, IT FSK: 0 Running Time: 134 mins “Jonas Kaufmann and Camilla Nylund fearlessly [pack] every phrase with compellingly truthful shades of meaning. Harnoncourt's Beethoven is famously raw and earthy: strong on struggle and on the composer's robust musical roots...The cameras' eyes direct us almost imperceptibly to crucial moments of musical and human relationship.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2010 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
