One gets a fair semblance of Arrau's artistry through a remarkable cache of recordings made for German Radio in 1937 and 1938. They are released here for the first time, with the exception of the Liszt E Flat concerto, which appeared on a long unavailable Russian Melodya LP and two rare commercially issued Parlophone 78s, added as encores. While Arrau made several important recordings prior to his emigration from Germany, his pre-war discography is small in comparison to his prolific output from the mid-forties on, when the pianist's international reputation solidified. The present compilation, therefore, adds significantly to what we know of Arrau's prime years. | | | (also available to download from $21.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Clara Haskil - The Salzburg Recital8 August 1957
David Dubal writes in The Art of the Piano, "Haskil was a distinctive artist in every sense. Her playing had a deep musicality and a vital intelligence. Her phrasing was always original, and in her work the listener sensed a maturity of feeling. Mozart was her joy of joys and she played it with the freshness of morning dew. Depending upon the work, a slightly suppressed inner passion might appear... Haskil's art has a timeless quality. It is a pity that she did not record far more than she did." | |

| | | Hermann Abendroth Conducts Beethoven, Brahms & Bruckner1939-1949 Broadcast Performances
“This Music & Arts set is perhaps the single best introduction to Abendroth, because of the consistent high level of its performances and Maggie Payne's excellent transfer work. Mark Kluge's informative and insightful notes are a nice extra bonus. This set is essential to those interested in the Central European conducting tradition as it was practiced in the middle of the 20th century.” Fanfare | | | (also available to download from $21.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
