Stefan Zweig, one of the greatest German language writers of the twentieth century, was born in Vienna. In the nineteenth century, the city was the musical, even cultural, capital of the Western world. Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven founded ‘Viennese Classicism’ and later of course Schoenberg, Berg and Webern created a revolution with the second ‘Viennese School’. So it comes as no surprise that music was the first source of inspiration for Stefan Zweig, a literary genius. The first CD of this 3-CD set explores the works of various composer associated with Vienna movements whilst discs 2&3 are devoted to The Silent Women, the Richard Strauss opera with a libretto by Stefan Zweig, in the historic version (1959) with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Karl Böhm. A recording long deleted from the catalogue and here reissued for this special set. |

| | | Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1-4, 7 and 8
The history of Beethoven symphonies on record began with the November 1913 recording of the fifth Symphony by Arthur Nikisch and the Berlin Philharmonic. It reaches a fascinating chapter with these recordings by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Herbert von Karajan, recorded by EMI’s Columbia label. They also mark a fascinating stage in the controversial career of Herbert Von Karajan. Not least, they form part of the remarkable legacy of a tenacious record producer/ impresario/entrepreneur. EMI Columbia Recording dates 1951-1956 |

| | | A Musical Journey: ItalyA Musical Tour of Tuscany, Rome and Perugia
The Places The journey starts in the countryside near Arezzo, and passes from there to other districts of Tuscany, to the wine-producing fields near Montalcino, and thence to Rome and to the volcanic Lake Bracciano. The tour ends in the ancient town of Perugia, for long an artistic centre. The Music The music of the tour consists of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 of 1812 and two overtures, Coriolanus and The Consecration of the House. | | | Beethoven - Complete Orchestral Works Volume 7The Creatures of Prometheus, Twelve Menuets & Twelve German Dances
On this CD, the latest in a series of critically acclaimed recordings of the complete orchestral works of Beethoven, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra Örebro and their chief conductor Thomas Dausgaard perform one of the composer’s lesser known pieces, the ballet music The Creatures of Prometheus. The disc also includes two other Beethoven rarities, the Twelve Menuets and Twelve German Dances. The music for the ballet The Creatures of Prometheus is Beethoven's only extensive contribution to the genre. The theme in the finale reoccurs in many later works, most notably in the 'Eroica' symphony. The two sets of dances recorded here form part of a tradition of popular dance music to which Haydn, Mozart and Schubert also contributed. Thomas Dausgaard is Chief Conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, and regularly appears as guest conductor with the leading orchestras throughout Europe, North America and the Far East. He has more recently made his debut with both the London Symphony Orchestra and Munich Philharmonic. Amongst many accolades received for the series, the performance of the Triple Concerto on Volume 5 (PSC1183), which featured pianist Boris Berezovsky, was chosen as a “Building a Library” choice on BBC Radio 3’s CD Review programme. |
