From modest beginnings in eighteenth-century Italy, the symphony soon developed into the highest form of western instrumental music at the hands of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The symphony became a big, public form that used the community of the orchestra to address the community of the audience. After two and a half centuries of the most varied masterpieces, the symphony still remains an ideal means for the individual voice to convey a world of ideas and feelings to a wide audience. Discover the Symphony, comprising two CDs and a 100-page booklet, traces the colourful and exciting story of a musical form that has expressed the most intimate emotions of the greatest composers and at the same time reflected the fascinating and often turbulent state of the world in which they lived. |

“Vickers doesn’t disappoint, singing with an intensity and a care for the sound and sense of every word that
are well nigh ideal. As the Angel, Constance Shacklock, gravely beautiful if occasionally too grand, is firstclass,
too…..it’s Vickers who makes this a must-have .” The Guardian, Friday May 23, 2008 |

Yann Beuron (narrator/centurion), Karen Cargill (Marie), William Dazeley (Joseph), Matthew Rose (Herod) & Peter Rose (Father/Polydorus) London Symphony Orchestra & Tenebrae Choir, Sir Colin Davis "Sustaining a mood of angelic sweetness for nearly two hours is quite a challenge, but this wonderful performance brought it off. Everything seemed to be just right - the chorus, the choice of soloists, the delicate but pointed orchestral sound. And of course the conductor, Colin Davis, who has long been Berlioz's champion on this earth … the real core of this performance was the wonderful chorus, Tenebrae" Daily Telegraph Concert Review | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
