| | | Berlioz: La Damnation De Faust
Born in Brichevo, in Bessarabia (then part of Romania) in 1927, Gary Bertini was taken to Palestine when still a boy and at age 16 he began violin lessons. Awarded the Israel Prize in 1987, in honour of his work for music in his adoptive land, Bertini was taken ill in February, 2005, whilst in Paris, and was transferred to a medical centre just outside Tel Aviv, allowing him to die (just three weeks later) in the country whose musical life he had done so much to enrich. This live recording of the 'Damnation of Faust' from the Mann Auditorium Tel Aviv, 1996, is an 'In Memoriam' to a conductor who founded and directed many of Israel's musical institutions such as the Rinat Choir and Israeli Chamber Orchestra, The Musical Evenings for Contemporary Music and the Liturgica Festival. He also conducted at the major opera houses around the world and served as Music Director of the San Carlo Opera in Naples. Ravel's 'Daphnis and Chloé' Ballet Music from 1974, with the Rinat Choir completes this 2-CD set. | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

| | | Marie-Nicole Lemieux sings Mahler, Berlioz & Wagner
A native of Québec, Marie-Nicole Lemieux gained international attention in 2000 when she won both the Prix de la Reine Fabiola and the Prix du Lied in Belgium. She has given recitals across Europe, Canada and the United States. The American pianist Daniel Blumenthal performs an encyclopaedic repertoire and has premiered many works, including the Debussy Piano Trio. “The unguarded emotionalism that has made this not-so-cool Canadian endearing is in evidence in almost every song here, with a particularly penetrating response to 'Schmerzen' in the Wesendonck songs. However, such interpretative responses come in primary colours, tempered by a steady stream of vocal tone....admirers of Lemieux will understand and appreciate this artist more having heard this recital.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2012 “Her French is, as you'd expect, impeccable; so is her German, in the Wagner and Mahler sets. Each unfolds unhurriedly but with a clear sense of direction...Lemieux sustains a fine flow of even tone across all the range...Lemieux's beautifully controlled performance suggests that the [Concours Reine-Elisabeth de Belgique] jury back in 1998 was more than justified in its verdict.” International Record Review, March 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Paul Daniel conducts Barber, Berlioz & Britten
Anne-Catherine Gillet (soprano) Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, Paul Daniel On the concert platform and on disc, Anne-Catherine Gillet radiates spontaneity, luminosity and enthusiasm in a way that is more than communicative. This outstanding recording of three masterpieces from the vocal repertoire provides an ideal opportunity to verify that. Listening, you will be charmed by the apparent facility, evidence and lightness of her phrasing. Anne-Catherine Gillet literally charms us with her fruity timbre, and it is impossible to remain impervious to the beauty of this new voice, accompanied with brio by the Liège Royal Philharmonic, conducted by one of the most prominent maestros of the lyric world, Paul Daniel. A moment of pure emotion, not to be missed on any account. “singing her native French, she treats the Berlioz and Britten with a light touch...Gillet and her conductor, Paul Daniel, are at their nest in a well-paced 'Le spectre de la rose', which captures the lilt of the dance to perfection...It is Les illuminations that gets the best performance of the three. The Liege players get some real bite out of the rhythms and Gillet lets her imagination take flight.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2012 “This is a dream of a programme, and the performances by Belgian soprano Anne-Catherine Gillet are enchanting...Her tuning is spot-on, and her stratospheric region – quite frequently explored in this work – sublime...The Liège orchestra’s playing is first class throughout, and Paul Daniel accompanies his singer most sensitively” MusicWeb International, February 2012 “in both Samuel Barber's rapt, nostalgia-drenched setting of James Agee's text in Knoxville: Summer of 1915, and in Britten's treatment of Rimbaud in Les Illuminations, Gillet shows exactly why she has become such a favourite in French and Belgian opera houses. Paul Daniel wraps Barber's instrumental lines around her voice with perfect tact, while in the Britten there's youthful energy and intensity in every phrase.” The Guardian, 22nd December 2011 *** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | La Scala 30/5/1960 sung in Italian as 'I Troiani'
Nell Rankin (Cassandra), Mario Del Monaco (Enea), Lino Puglisi (Corebo), Fiorenza Cossotto (Ascanio), Agostino Ferrin (Panto), Antonio Cassinelli (ghost of Hector), Giulietta Simionato (Didone), Adriana Lazzarini (Anna), Nicola Zaccaria (Narbal) & Piero de Palma (Hylas) Orchestra & Chorus of La Scala, Milan, Rafael Kubelik The first Italian 'I Troiani', much-admired production and choreography by Margherita Wallmann. BONUS: Mario Del Monaco sings scenes and arias from: Aida, Otello, Manon Lescaut, Carmen, L'Africana, Lohengrin with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano della Rai “A few allowances are required: the sound is basic; there are cuts; and it's in Italian rather than the original French. But it also makes for electrifying listening. Kubelík conducts with implacable intensity and dignity...The real shock, though, is Nell Rankin's Cassandra – a performance of uncompromising veracity from an artist hugely under-represented on disc. Not a first-choice recording, but essential listening for anyone who cares about Berlioz.” The Guardian, 5th January 2012 **** “This live 1960 Milan set is a monument to the dark ages of Berlioz’s magnum opus...Mario Del Monaco may be a crude, can belto Aeneas, but Nell Rankin is a feisty Cassandra and Giulietta Simionato a noble Dido...[Kubelik] conducts with flair and deep understanding.” Sunday Times, 27th May 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
