‘’If I have seen it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants’’ Letter from Isaac Newton to Robert Hooke, 5 February 1676

The art of brass playing embraces a range of diverse approaches and styles. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the musical melting pot of the USA. On the Shoulders of Giants pays tribute to this diversity and to the great American brass virtuosi whose legacy has provided the foundation for countless giants of today.

The world premiere of the wind orchestra version was given at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on the 21st October 2011 under the direction of Nigel Boddice MBE.

James Willshire (piano)

World première recordings made in the presence of the composer

This year 2010 British Composer Award winner Rory Boyle celebrates his 60th birthday. Young virtuoso pianist James Willshire’s debut recording explores the full gamut of Boyle’s compositional personality – from the cragginess of his finely wrought Sonata to the intensely human lyricism of Tatty’s Dancing (itself a 60th birthday present for Boyle's wife).

“Willshire shaped and characterised every moment with freshness and lucidity.” The Herald, September 2007

“While Boyle’s scottish roots are never far away, his music has a strong, mainstream European, Stravinsky-based rigour, with its own brand of virile, challenging, but always comprehensible counterpoint, dissonance which is hardfought yet never gratuitous, an unsentimental lyricism and unerring sense of architecture.” Nicholas Cleobury

“Boyle (born 1951) has built a compact oeuvre of predominantly tonal pieces that showcase a gift for natural melody. Too traditional for today’s taste? Judging by this CD he deserves to be better known...In all, Boyle shows a distinctive voice and fluent imagination” Financial Times, 23rd April 2011

“Boyle’s compact, pungent Sonata makes for compelling listening, especially the central Recitatives and Dreams with its bell-like sonorities...the myth of Phaethon driving the sun chariot allows Boyle to compose a compact sequence of five bleak, pithy dances. It’s not a comfortable listening experience, but it’s so, so exciting.” Graham Rickson, The Arts Desk, 28th May 2011

“a composer of considerable range and depth...This is challenging, yet accessible music.” MusicWeb International, February 2012

Lawrence Zazzo (countertenor) & Shizuki Noiri (lute)

Lawrence Zazzo is regarded as the most versatile operatic countertenor of his generation. Here he explores the intimacy of the lute song in a remarkable programme focusing on madness and midnight. He performs works by Dowland and Purcell as well as exploring the contemporary repertoire for countertenor.

“Zazzo's voice is pure, strong and individual....For the most part, [he] is a convincing storyteller. Indeed, he fits Burgon's cycle and Boyle's Two Love Lyrics into a cohesive, highly satisfying musical and poetic narrative. Noiri's accompaniments are clear, keen-edged and beautifully articulated” BBC Music Magazine, October 2011 ****

“Zazzo and Noiri thrive in this madhouse of a recital, their respective instruments as well adapted to bringing out the subtleties and ambiguities inherent in a de la Mare, Auden or MacNiece poem as in the discords that infect the melodiousness of Dowland and Burgon alike. Lunarcy it may be, 'though this be madness, yet there is method in't '” International Record Review, September 2011
