“This remains Nigel Kennedy’s finest achievement on record, arguably even finer than the long line of versions with star international soloists from either outside or within Britain. With Vernon Handley as guide it is a truly inspired and inspiring performance and the recording is outstandingly faithful and atmospheric.” Penguin Guide |

Known simply as ‘The Maestro’, Toscanini attracted adoring fans wherever and whenever he performed and his visit to London in 1935 was nothing short of a sensation, quickly becoming the hottest ticket in town. Toscanini had already dazzled London audiences in 1930 with the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra and when he returned to the capital five years later he performed with a British ensemble for the first time: the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Formed in 1930, the BBCSO quickly established a reputation for virtuosity and was an ideal vehicle for Toscanini’s fiery musicianship. His visit was without question the highlight of the orchestra’s short history to that date. The HMV recordings that result from this collaboration has simply not been overpassed For instance, his outstanding performance of La Mer benefits from a both a vital energy and a variety of colour (that the recording, despite of his age, is surprisingly fully able to bring to our ears) and explains by itself the higher respect from the composer to the maestro. |

| | | John McCormack: I'll Walk Beside You
Opera arias by Bizet, Mascagni, Donizetti, Gounod, Puccini, Verdi, Thomas, Rossini, Leoncavallo, Ponchielli; songs by Brahms, Elgar, Faure, Handel, Martini, Mozart, Quilter, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Wolf, Hahn, Schubert, Richard Strauss, Bantock, Coleridge-Taylor, Cornelius, Wagner and Vaughan Williams
Even in his lifetime, the singer John McCormack was synonymous with Ireland. His worldwide success attracted a host of imitators, so that he could be said to have invented the ‘Irish tenor’. But a few minutes spent with the unique recordings of the original will quickly put the others in their place. McCormack was among a handful of artists of his time – others were Enrico Caruso, Fritz Kreisler, Amelita Galli-Curci and Sergei Rachmaninov – whose records could be found in every middle-class parlour in the civilised world. Even fellow singers looked up to him as a paragon of vocal technique and enunciation. Above all, he was a master communicator who could touch listeners’ hearts with his sincerity in the simplest of ballads. Although his recitals were usually packed with thousands of adoring fans, through his records he reached out to countless millions in the states of middle America, the outback of Australia or the hinterland of Africa who would never hear him in person. |

Constantin Silvestri was born in Bucharest, Romania on 31st May 1913. His mother had to bring him up as both his father and stepfather had died whilst he was still a teenager. By the age of six he was playing both piano and organ and showed skill as an improviser. Although not in conducting classes at the Conservatoire in Bucharest he was already appearing as a conductor in his teens, making his debut with the Bucharest Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1930 in a concert which included The Rite of Spring and one of his own compositions. After further success with the National Radio Orchestra of Romania he decided to make conducting his career. In 1935 he started his association with the Romanian National Opera and directed the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra for six years. In 1948 he started teaching at the Conservatoire and founded its Conducting Department. Whilst conducting all the main orchestras in Romania he was also able to accept guest appearances in the USSR, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. In 1957 he also made his debut in the U.K. conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall and started making recordings for EMI in London, Paris and Vienna. Before leaving his home country he had his greatest success there – the premiere of Enesco’s opera Oedipe in 1958. Settling first in Paris in 1959 and then in England when offered the post of Principal Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. With his meticulous and lengthy preparation in rehearsals he raised the standard and prestige of the orchestra to one of international standing. He became a British citizen in 1967 but his growing reputation was cut short by increasing ill-health and he died of cancer in London on 23rd February 1968 at the age of 55. This set presents the Complete Recordings made by Constantin Silvestri for EMI. The microphones did offer to this “fanatical idealist” the most favourable circumstances to let his particular talent blossom. |

| | | Edward Elgar: Go, song of minePart-Songs and Choral Works
Drawn from across the composer's lengthy career, this collection of Part-Songs and Choral-Works explores the great variety and range within Elgar's work for choir and voices. Along with more well-known works such as 'Love' and 'Deep in my Soul' there are early pieces such as 'O Salutaris hostia' (composed for small amateur choirs) that give hints of his later mature style, through to the 1928 piece 'I sing the Birth' – a work that shows Elgar's ability to adapt to more contemporary styles of 20th-century choral composition. The Rodolfus Choir have established themselves as one of the leading youth choirs in Britain, made up of singers aged from 16 to 25 who have been chosen from past and present members of the Eton Choral Courses for prospective choral scholars. Many members of the Choir are choral scholars, some are at music college, and most hope to make a career in music. The Rodolfus Choir and Ralph Allwood are well-known for imaginative programming, and for presenting new music. The Rodolfus Choir’s recent CD recordings with Signum include music as diverse as Howells, Monteverdi, Grier, Tallis and the German Romantics. “The combination of Ralph Allwood and the Rodolfus Choir usually means quality. It does again here in this excellently sung recital of Elgar choral pieces. It's hard, in fact, to imagine 'Go, song of mine', the opening item, done better...When simplicity of utterance is necessary, the Rodolfus deliver it unfussily.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 **** “The delicacy (and occasional fragility) of the Rodolfus's young voices make the effect [in 'Owls'] even more poignant...[Give unto the Lord] rounds off this hugely enjoyable disc with aplomb.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2013 “The strength and major appeal of this disc will surely be the opportunity it presents to discover just how much Elgar could be an explorer … Elgarians and others tempted by the works assembled in this new collection can be assured that it is on a par with the best of them” International Record Review, March 2013 “The Rodolfus Choir shine strongly in these well-loved Elgar part-songs choral works.” MusicWeb International, April 2013 |

| | | Elgar: The Longed-for LightElgar's Music in Wartime
The outbreak of the Great War caused Elgar much anguish and depression and the music composed during these years reflects his sorrow and deep patriotism. Apart from Elgar’s early Sursum Corda Op. 11 (composed in 1894), this disc takes us on a musical journey from shortly before the war began to the composer’s last wartime orchestral work, The Sanguine Fan, a shaft of light during the darkest days of the war in 1917. The music on this disc, although not premiere recordings (they were originally recorded by the HMV label), this is the first modern recording not only of these works but also to provide a unique survey of Elgar’s compositions of this time. Performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra and conducted by John Wilson, this CD also includes Susan Gritton and the renowned actor Simon Callow who is the speaker on Le Drapeau Belge Op 79. “Here's a supremely enjoyable Elgar survey centred around a clutch of works composed during the Great War...Throughout, the BBC Concerto Orchestra respond with bright-eyed conviction and commendable polish for John Wilson, whose endearingly communicative, shapely and affectionate readings...hold their own...Elgarians shoudl ceratinly lend an ear to this entreprising and rewarding Somm anthology” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013 “This is a rewarding disc, giving us opportunities to hear some Elgar scores that rarely see the light of day. John Wilson is in evident sympathy with the music and secures consistently fine playing from the BBC Concert Orchestra...The texts are included - though you won’t need them to follow Simon Callow’s speech, so clear is his diction” MusicWeb International, 26th April 2013 “Un Voix dans le désert, Carillon and Le Drapeau Belge are melodramas to wartime verse by the Belgian Emile Cammaerts, vigorously proclaimed by Callow, with a taut solo from Gritton halfway through the first. More interesting agitprop is the purely orchestral Polonia” Sunday Times, 18th November 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
