Recorded in 2008. Muza Rubackyte is a Lithuanian pianist living in Paris. She has made many recordings for the Lyrinx label, including an acclaimed set of Liszt, of which the BBC Music Magazine wrote, ‘Rubackyte’s Annees de Pelerinage rises to the top of this cycle’s shortlist.’ This month sees her debut on Brilliant Classics, in two albums of music by César Franck. Franck's dense, chromatic harmonies and incense-laden melodies present unique challenges to pianists, and these works are rarely recorded except by legendary artists such as Rubinstein and Richter. This is the first CD to bring together all three of Franck’s Bach-style keyboard works on a single issue – the Prelude, Fugue and Variation was originally composed for organ – and they make a revelatory coupling. |

| | | Segovia - 1950's American Recordings Volume 6
In this sixth and last volume of André Segovia’s 1950s American recordings, the great guitarist is heard in a number of his transcriptions from eminent nineteenth century composers as well as in original guitar solos composed by his Spanish and South American contemporaries. The considerable diversity of the music is presented in Segovia’s inimitable manner, every nuance of sound and colour being uniquely exploited in delicately refined interpretations. Of particular note is Segovia’s interpretation of Falla’s Homenaje ‘Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy’, now regarded as one of the most emotionally charged solo guitar works. In his preface to Villa-Lobos’s Douze Etudes, that the composer had dedicated to him, Segovia writes: ‘Villa- Lobos has made a gift to the guitar’s history of the fruits of his talents as vigorous and as wise as that of Scarlatti and Chopin’. “…there have been…few to rival the variety and beauty of the sounds [Segovia] produced…he was certainly the guitar's most powerful advocate, the ultimate 'effective guitarist' who opened doors for all those who followed” Gramophone |

| | | Proustor How The Heart Skips A Beat
Stéphanie Romberg, Eleonora Abbagnato, Manuel Legris, Stephane Bullion, Hervé Moreau (dancers) Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Paris & Ballet de l'Opéra National de Paris, Koen Kessels In 1974, Roland Petit, probably the greatest and certainly one of the most prolific of 20th century French
choreographers he was the first person to create a work based on Proust's novel, A la recherche du temps
perdu, completed in 1922, the year of his death. The book, better known to Anglo-Saxon readers as In Search
of Lost Time, in which the author's homosexuality is latent, was written over the last 14 years of his life. Marcel
Proust mingles childhood souvenirs with adolescent memories and is full of nostalgia for places once visited
and exhibitions he'd seen. He dwells lengthily on love, passion, and jealousy and inevitably questions one's
reason for living.
Proust ou les intermittences du coeur has now happily entered into the repertoire of the Paris Opéra Ballet. It
consists of 13 vignettes inspired by the seven lengthy tomes which complete the unabridged work, Petit has
chosen to convey the spirit of the novel via a succession of impressionistic tableaux which reflect the changing
moods of the writer as he oscillated between periods of intense happiness and deep depression. And
although the choreographer paints a merciless portrait of the aristocracy and bourgeoisie during the Belle
Epoque, the highlights of the work lie in the series of poetical pas de deux, which at times might have seemed
a little disconnected, but at which the French choreographer is past master. Choreography & stage direction Roland Petit; Designer Luisa Spinatelli; Sets Bernard Michel; Lighting Jean-Michel Désire Palais Garnier, March 2007 |

| | | Grainger - Transcriptions for Wind Band
Ivor Hovorun (piano) Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra, Clark Rundell The eccentric Percy Grainger was well-known for his musical arrangements which ranged from works by other
composers as well as arrangements of his own original and folk music settings. These arrangements form a body of
work which is perhaps unique in musical history.
Most of the works on this CD are taken from a series Grainger named Chosen Gems for Winds. Grainger had a
musical mind of unusual breadth and vision, with interests spanning the ages from mediaeval music to the latest
twentieth century developments and had the vision to see this context of the wind orchestra setting. It is likely that
enlisting in the American Army as a bandsman at the outbreak of World War I, cemented his interest in wind band
music, along with an awareness of Stokowski’s Bach transcriptions. |

| | | Franck & Shostakovich - Violin Sonatas
Sergey Khachatryan (violin) & Lusine Khachatryan (piano) “This Shostakovich performance is extremely impressive, the technical difficulties seemingly of no account, and the vast design of the final passacaglia compellingly sustained with playing that ranges from precise and delicate, through mysterious and poetic, to the highest degree of force and energy (in the two solo variations).” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008 |
