George Gershwin (1898-1937)

American composer and pianist who brought together jazz idioms, skill as a songwriter and a classical competency. He wrote Rhythm, Summertime, Lady be Good. Some of these were to words by his brother Ira. His opera Porgy and Bess and Rhapsody in Blue are especially well known. His life was cut short by a brain tumour.
