Leopold Godowsky was a prolific composer with a catalog of several hundred works. Celebrated as a brilliant pianist during his lifetime, his legacy has been assured by his compositions. Godowsky composed almost exclusively for the piano, and his works for that instrument are considered masterpieces of the literature. They are notable for their full counterpoint, interwoven melodies, and the care with which they are designed to fit the hand.
Known more for his transcriptions than his original compositions, Godowsky's own works comprise different styles and levels of difficulty. Some of Godowsky's compositions justify his reputation as a writer of virtuosic music, but others are written for intermediate and even beginning pianists. More than any other composer, he wrote great works for the left hand alone. He is famous for his detailed fingerings, and many pianists have described a sense of physical pleasure in following them.
