Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire’s eagerly awaited new album, Brasileiro: Villa-Lobos & Friends, pays tribute to his country’s greatest composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos, upon the 125th anniversary of his birth.

In containing Freire’s personal choice of rarely recorded pieces by seven other lesser-known Brazilian composers whose music helped shape his artistic personality during his formative early years, the album also offers a sonic “portrait of the pianist as a young man”.

Comprising works that roughly span the seventy or so years of Villa-Lobos’s own lifetime, Freire’s chosen repertoire chronicles the efforts of three generations of Brazilian composers to forge a recognisably national musical language out of an amalgam of European influences and indigenous folk and popular styles.

In combination with his trademark technical mastery and legendary sense of melodic line, Nelson Freire’s quintessentially Latin American temperament and innate sense of rhythmic ease ensure that he brings a uniquely authentic touch to the rarely heard piano music of his native land.

“Freire characterises and colours each one inimitably, never searching for emotional depths that aren't there, nor attempting to confer profundity on music that is mostly intended simply to be enjoyed...if there is a more perfectly played piano disc released this year, we will be very lucky indeed.” The Guardian, 23rd August 2012 *****

“Freire's kind of artistry raises [the repertoire] to an entirely different level. There's plenty of flair and soul, yet the playing is always crystalline and precise, perfectly pedalled, the colours as subtle as a Debussy prelude...Just drop-dead gorgeous repertoire and performances: I don't think I've enjoyed any piano recording more this year.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2012 *****

“Freire presents a masterlcass in nonchalant playfulness, capturing to perfection the charm of a composer often criticised for being too fecund and unselfcritical but here heard at his best...Freire is a class act - and 'Brasiliero', immaculately recorded by the way, is sheer delight from start to finish.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2012

Max Barros (piano)

Mozart Camargo Guarnieri was the most important Brazilian composer next to Villa-Lobos. Guarnieri’s piano music embodies his most distinctive stylistic features. One of his most beloved works, the Dança Negra shares folk-music inspiration with the Suite Mirim. The Ponteios are characterized by an enormous variety of Brazilian music styles and moods, and the Sonata can be seen as a summary of Guarnieri’s musical personality. Max Barros’s “unfaltering brio and a complete command of the idiom” (Gramophone) can also be heard in Guarnieri’s Piano Concertos (8557666 and 8557667).

“[Max Barros] proves to be a perfect guide: technically gifted, at one with the music's idiom and a wholly committed and passionate advocate...without doubt this set is an important and valuable expansion of the recorded repertoire of this fine Brazilian composer. Volume two will be eagerly awaited.” MusicWeb International, April 2013

The recordings by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra of works by Villa-Lobos, Camargo Guarnieri and other Brazilian composers have demonstrated the variety of their national music and the multi-faceted nature of Brazilian dance.

Alexandre Levy’s Samba and Alberto Nepomuceno’s Batuque are early examples of a Brazilian art music which draws heavily on the dance rhythms of popular music.

Notable latter-day examples are Antônio ‘Tom’ Jobim with his Chegada dos Candangos from 1960 and Edino Krieger’s Passacaglia for the New Millennium.

Roberto Minczuk has previously led the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra in acclaimed performances of Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras on BIS (BISCD1830/32), and here returns with this colourful collection of dances for symphony orchestra.

“The quality is first-rate, a tribute to the musical and expressive gains Minczuk can achieve when an orchestra is with him...The real find of the disc for me was Edino Krieger's Passacalha para o Novo Milenio, a finely crafted score that slows the pace of the disc down nicely before the final pair of works...this is a winning and hugely entertaining disc. Enjoy!” Gramophone Magazine, April 2012

Since the death of Leopold Stokowski in 1976 his reputation has soared among collectors with the issue and reissue of many performances conducted by him. Many of these have been of the great orchestral masterpieces, but this exciting new release is made up entirely of short, mainly American, pieces of music from the lighter part of the repertoire, all performed by the NBC Symphony Orchestra during World War II. Many of these tracks have never been issued before, and we are therefore proud to present to the public for the first time a collection such as this, with the sound enhanced according to the latest techniques. A 'must' for all Stokowski admirers, for all students of great conducting and for all lovers of light music.

Piano Concerto No. 4

Piano Concerto No. 6

World Première Recording

Mozart Camargo Guarnieri is universally recognised as the most important Brazilian composer after Villa-Lobos.

The Six Piano Concertos, composed over a period of forty years, offer a complete panorama of Guarnieri’s stylistic evolution, in particular his blend of sophisticated compositional techniques and the improvisational character of Brazilian folk-music.

The Piano Concertos Nos. 4 and 5 display a number of avant-garde features that are fundamentally different from the more nationalistic vocabulary that informs the earlier three piano concertos (Naxos 8557666).

Completed shortly after the composer’s eightieth birthday, the chamber-like, intimate Piano Concerto No. 6 returns to an earlier style.

“...their dazzling presentation takes us on a tirelessly energetic journey into exotica, though with a marked difference...Barros delivers shoals of notes with unfaltering brio and a complete command of the idiom, and he is brilliantly partnered and recorded.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2010

Batata-Coco

Duane Cochran (piano)

Camerata de las Americas, Joel Sachs

A cosmopolitan city, a place of privilege for encounters, dialogues and clashes, suddenly realizes that an unprecedented phenomenon has come to being in its midst. Accustomed to speaking of itself in terms of Latin or Afro-American quarters, for instance, the city hesitates as it tries to find a name for the new space. Yesterday's adjectives seem unwieldy: the untiring blender of mestizaje and fusion has worked with such intensity that its labour finally muddles the limits between the neighbourhoods, and borders become tenuous in this new cartography. The city witnesses, reacting with alarm and enthusiasm, witnesses the appearance of a zone where the confrontation of traditions is so constant and dynamic that it becomes to no one and everyone at the same time.

So is Batata-Coco born. . . .

Valsa da Dor

Kathryn Stott writes: ‘This year is very much a celebration for me – a fiftieth birthday and thirty years on the concert platform! When Ralph Couzens and I started to discuss plans for a solo CD, I was very keen to record repertoire which would reflect my wide taste in music from around the world. The subject ‘dance’ was in my head from the start and so here we have a musical journey encompassing South American countries, Romanian and Hungarian folk music, and dances from the Polish Mazurka to the Russian Polka, via Finland, France and Spain, to name but a few! Piazzolla sits alongside Satie as do Sibelius and Albéniz… dances both joyous and sad. I’m particularly excited to include the world premiere of Old Style, a birthday present from one of my favourite British composers, Graham Fitkin.’

South American music is a great love of Stott’s and so the inclusion of Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla, Ginastera, Guarnieri and Lecuona was essential: ‘Valsa da dor I find both touching and passionate, whereas Ginastera’s Danza has a distant sadness, which is almost untouchable.’ Stott has previously worked with the members of Piazzolla’s original Quintet, and has remained an avid fan ever since. Here she performs Milonga del ángel, a work that recreates the haunting sound of the bandoneón.

This eclectic repertoire of dances is completed by the premiere of Old Style by Graham Fitkin, written for Kathryn Stott in celebration of her landmark anniversaries this year: ‘For the past ten years, Graham has been writing the most fantastic music for me – always challenging but with such a fantastic energy. This piece is no exception and I feel its inclusion is an important part of this international and rather special journey.’

Kathryn Stott’s birthday celebrations culminate in a concert at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on 4 December, at which a total of twenty-five colleagues will perform with her, including Yo-Yo Ma, Natalie Clein, the Hermitage String Trio and Martin Roscoe.

“Kathryn Stott's enjoyable and warmly recorded recital of dance pieces has a Latin-American bias, an idiom for which she has an evident empathy. Stott shapes the sultry rhythms and sensuous harmonies with allure and velvety touch.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2008 ****

“Notching up her half-century has clearly not quelled the joy of discovery and sense of adventure that's marked the career of this delightful artist. Worth the price of the disc alone are Dansa negra by Mozart Carmargo Guarnieri (1907-93), Lecuona's La conga de media noche, and Old Style, the disc's one concession to dance music by a British composer, specially written for Stott by Graham Fitkin... Satie's salon waltz Je te veux affords another unexpected find, but it's the final selection, Chopin's Mazurka in A minor... that is the most moving... performance on this most enjoyable disc.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2009

“Notching up her half-century has clearly not quelled the joy of discovery and sense of adventure that's marked the career of this delightful artist. Kathryn Stott decided the best way in which to mark her 50th would be with dance.
Sixteen composers contribute to the celebration, with most of the works relatively unfamiliar but all of them having close personal associations.
It seems invidious to trawl through each track one by one, for all are encore-type charmers in one way or another, the one exception being Valse triste. Worth the price of the disc alone are Dansa negra by Mozart Carmargo Guarnieri (1907-93), Lecuona's La conga de media noche, and Old Style, the disc's one concession to dance music by a British composer, specially written for Stott by Graham Fitkin (b1963). It juxtaposes four dance and playing styles. It certainly gives the pianist a workout. Satie's salon waltz Jete veux affords another unexpected find, but it's the final selection, Chopin's Mazurka in A minor (ironically the only dance here that one would really want to sit out), that is the most moving (and, arguably, outstanding) performance on this most enjoyable disc.”
