Young Norwegian mezzo-soprano Tuva Semmingsen displays both vocal agility and a wide-ranging emotional range in a disc of arias from Handel. The disc unveils a portrait of Handel: his emergence in the early Italian-styled Amadigi, reaching maturity in the ‘English operatic’, and arriving finally in the perennial melodic grace of Theodora. These works interspersed with instrumental works by Handel’s Italian contemporaries. Corelli and Geminiani, played by Norwegian period band Barokksolistene. “Some of these world versions of classic London songs bear repeated listening and all are good fun” Financial Times, 4th August 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Acis and Galatea, variously described as a pastoral, a ‘little opera’ and a masque, is one of Handel’s most popular works. It is a delectable succession of pastoral airs, love-lorn lyrics, and sprightly or mourning choruses, spiced by the pungent and unforgettable interjection of the one-eyed giant Polyphemus, who destroys the idyll of the shepherd Acis and the nymph Galatea. Handel had first turned to the subject in a cantata written in Naples in 1708. His English work, formally a masque, went through several stages until this two-act version of 1739, written principally by John Gay and graced by Handel’s exquisite music. “Schwarz's 1991 Seattle Acis is disciplined but passe in sound, style and rhythmic gait. It skimps on Handelian delight, though its soloist quartet is decent.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2012 ** | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | A Musical Journey: ItalyA Musical Tour of South Tyrol
The Places South Tyrol, in Northern Italy, has had a varied history, for many years as part of Austrian territory. The region remains largely German-speaking, although both German and Italian are used. Looming over the territory are the mountains, the Dolomites, with their strange shapes, and the Alps, while the valleys provide fertile ground for the production of wine. The Music Music for the tour is taken from four Concerti grossi by Handel. Born in Halle in 1685, Handel had his first musical employment there and then in Hamburg, before moving in 1706 to Italy, where he remained until 1710, when he was appointed Kapellmeister to the Elector of Hanover. He travelled almost at once to London, where he had been engaged to compose an Italian opera, and from 1712 until his death in 1759 settled in England, winning fame first as a composer of Italian opera and then as the creator of English oratorio. Video Format • NTSC / Colour / 4:3 Audio Format • DTS 5.1 / Dolby Digital 5.1 / PCM Stereo 2.0 Region Coding • No Region Coding “This issue opens with spectacular views, including mountains, valleys, lakes and countryside including the vineyards...The visuals are accompanied by Handel concerti grossi, a format popular in its day and well performed here by the Capella Istropolitana conducted with appropriate contrasting vitality and élan as befits many of the landscapes.” MusicWeb International, December 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | John Thomas: Welsh Music for Voice and Harps
Appropriately, the Welsh harpist and composer John Thomas was born on St. David’s Day in 1826. In later life, he was invested with the title of Pencerdd Gwalia (Chief Musician of Wales) and became harpist to Queen Victoria. His works are performed by the Welsh mezzo-soprano Rachel Ann Morgan and Edward Witsenburg, the doyen of Dutch harpists. “Rachel Ann Morgan is a harpist who also sings, in the standard Welsh tradition but her basically folk-orientated style of delivery, which is fine with the Welsh settings, sounds decidedly uncomfortable in what are effectively Italian or English art songs...However Dutch harpist Edward Witsenburg has exactly the right feeling for the music that one would more naturally expect from Rachel Ann Morgan. They combine well in duet.” MusicWeb International, August 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

The baroque woman was confined to a strictly domestic role. She was either saintly (mother of Christ and the subject of religious allegory as in Handel’s Trionfo del tempo e del disinganno), a diva, a queen (Poppea, Cleopatra) or the inevitable victim in classical tragedies like Semiramis, Berenice, Rodelinda and Agrippina. 'Ladies sing Baroque' is shaped as a nod to those ladies who have enchanted jazz, but composed of music from two centuries earlier: hymns to emotion, the tunes that disturb for eternity! Monteverdi's invention of opera, Vivaldi's music for the Pieta, Pergolesi and Bach bring the drama and emotion found in temples and churches. Highlights include the final duet from 'L'Incorronazione di Poppea' and Bach's sublime 'Erbarme dich' whilst two Canadians with strong characters, Marie-Nicole Lemieux and Karina Gauvin, successfully evoke the legendary association of Marilyn Horne and Montserrat Caballé. | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

Here for the first time on CD is Glyndebourne’s acclaimed 1996 production of Handel’s oratorio Theodora. Although Theodora is a story of a virtuous woman and sexual persecution, this has not proved to be an obstacle to its enduring success, the subject a deeply touching one, resonating from the age of antiquity to the present day. The recording is the debut on the Glyndebourne label for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, one of Glyndebourne’s two resident orchestras. This audio release, in no way detracting from the extraordinary Peter Sellar’s production, allows the focus to be on the soloists, conductor and orchestra. This recording confirms Lorraine Hunt as a true Handelian, capturing the spirit of Irene as few others could. In counter-tenor David Daniels as Didymus, there is a breadth of range drawing the listener away from the oft strained and forced falsetto sound. From the outset Dawn Upshaw is a heartfelt Theodora culminating magnificently in her final duet with Daniels ‘Thither let our hearts aspire…’ the delivery, sensitivity and ensemble nothing short of numbing. There is no better choice of debut release from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment on the Glyndebourne label, William Christie’s musical approach one of transcendence, making the most of this wonderful music. Great opera performances are often fleeting moments in time but since 1960, every note of every Glyndebourne Festival performance has been recorded. ‘Eaves-dropping’ on these live performances allows some of the most seminal opera performances of the last fifty years to be enjoyed by all. “something very special is audible here: though slow to ignite in all but Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's transcendent Irene, there is a sense of collective devotion as electric as any Bach Passion...American accent to the fore, Upshaw tears up the Baroque style-manual. It's gushy, sometimes croony, a hair's breadth from broadway, but it is deeply felt and deeply moving.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2012 **** “The special qualities remain intact without the visual dramatic elements...Avid Handelians must own this just for Lorraine Hunt's singing of 'As with rosy steps', which abounds in integrity and humanity...David Daniels has never made a better studio recording than his nobly courageous Didymus...The OAE's playing is routinely marvellous; Christie's pacing and characterisation of Handel's music are satisfyingly lyrical.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2012 “[Hunt and Daniels] have such richness and evenness of tone coupled with a vivid sense of the dramatic and their two voices remain utterly distinctive in character. The chorus is superb: young and flexible-sounding; Christie directs a nuanced yet direct account” MusicWeb International, June 2012 “start listening and you’re hooked within minutes...The small cast are consistently impressive...Christie conducts with plenty of bounce and joie de vivre, though never unplaying the score’s occasional reflective moments...All indecently enjoyable for a tragedy.” The Arts Desk, 30th June 2012 “Those who saw Peter Sellars' production of Theodora with its original American cast or any of its revivals is unlikely to forget the experience...Anyone wanting a library version of the oratorio would be better considering one of the studio-made recordings, but as a memento of one of Glyndebourne's finest shows of recent times, it's matchless.” The Guardian, 4th April 2012 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
