| | | Sung in Danish
Johan Reuter (Johann Friedrich Struensee), Gert Henning-Jensen (King Christian VII), Elisabeth Jansson (Queen Caroline Mathilde), Sten Byriel (Ove Høegh-Guldberg), Djina Mai-Mai (Bootee-Caterine) & Gitta-Maria Sjøberg (Queen Dowager Juliane Marie) Royal Danish Opera Choir & Royal Danish Orchestra, Bo Holten Based on the bestselling novel by P.O. Enquist Bo Holten's new opera The Visit of the Royal Physician, based on the best-selling novel by Per Olov Enquist, was a great success with both audience and critics after its premiere in 2009. The opera is set in the 1770s, one of the most dramatic periods in Danish history, and is a story of tragic love, intrigue and a lust for power. It tells the story of the young, idealistic doctor Struensee who dreams of creating a new and better world. He is given the chance to put his ideas into practice when, almost by coincidence, he becomes royal physician to the insane King Christian VII. Soon he is also the lover of the young Queen Caroline Mathilde. The result is a disaster for all those involved. The performance was recorded at the Copenhagen Opera and is conducted by the composer. Region Code: 0 Subtitles: English, German and French Running Time: c. 154 min + 37 min bonus material Bonus material: Interviews with Bo Holten, Eva Sommestad Holten, Johan Reuter, Elisabeth Jansson, Gert Henning-Jensen “Holten has gone to great length to achieve diversity of style without shallow opportunism and, more practically, to ensure that the voices are not swamped...Most striking of all, to me, is Struensee's monologue near the end of Act 1, where he senses his mission, and the music superbly articulates the mixture of noble intent and unease...Holten has produced a serious, thought-provoking drama and as such it is not to be missed.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Holten: Venus' Wheel
Joris Derder (baritone), Luc Tooten (cello), Johan Reuter (baritone), Sarah van Mol (soprano) & Hilde Venken (soprano) Flemish Radio Choir, Bo Holten Venus’ Wheel is a medieval symbolic framework for this collection of choral works by Bo Holten. Himself a renowned conductor, Holten leads the Flemish Radio Choir on a passionate journey through the many facets of love using the whole of musical history as a sounding board for his own contemporary idiom. “As an unashamed neo-romantic, Holten responds magnificently to a wider range of love lyrics throughout the album...In terms of pure vocal pleasure, Holten's arrangements of one of Mahler's Rückert-Lieder takes the first prize...Well worth exploring.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2013 “The performances under the composer’s own direction must surely be definitive. Certainly there need be no reservations on account of the performance standards since the Flemish Radio Choir here shows itself to be a highly accomplished and flexible ensemble. The recorded sound is very good, showing the performances in the best possible light” MusicWeb International, 2nd May 2013 |

| | | Sanctum Est Verum LumenMulti-Part Music for Choir
Tallis's monumental Spem in alium is one of the greatest glories of Western polyphony, and its preechoes and aftershocks reverberate through all the other pieces on this disc. The massed voices of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, in their 25th anniversary year, dazzle in this programme of choral jewels from the 15th and 16th centuries, interspersed with virtuoso tributes from three leading contemporary composers, including Gabriel Jackson's own 40-part motet. “…though, this is a disc of stunning music beautifully performed.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2009 **** “Sanctum est verum lumen… comes across as an astonishing tour de force, the strands of musical texture cascading through this cast choir with glorious luminosity. These young singers take the work to heart and beyond the almost incredible choral discipline and uniformity of tone that Brewer produces from well over 200 individual voices, there is a real sense of enthusiasm which never intrudes into the technical security of the performance but adds a lovely lustre to Delphian's luxuriant recording. It is... unusual to hear Spem in alium performed with... between five and six voiced per part. ...if one is prepared to put thoughts of authenticity aside, the results are spine-tinglingly spectacular.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

| | | Bo Holten - Wisdom and Follyand other choral works
Danish National Girls Choir/DR, Danish National Choir/DR, Bo Holten “Bo Holten has written a substantial corpus of choral music but, as he observes in his notes to the recording, 'the tonal style of my writing has not really seemed politically correct to the bodies commissioning music in Denmark'. While many composers who have written large amounts of choral music in many countries would say substantially the same thing, it should not be forgotten that Holten is also an accomplished orchestral composer. Indeed, the two worlds come together in the Tallis Variations (1976). At least, they are intended to come together though it's hard to explain the feeling of incompleteness that remains after such a promising clash of sound worlds of strings and choir. Many of the other works recorded here also draw on Holten's extensive knowledge of early music (particularly Renaissance polyphony) but perhaps the most successful work on the disc is one of the oddest, defying easy categorisation: Ebbe Skammelsøn (2001) is based on an old Danish ballad and is a kind of mini-opera featuring choir, 12 soloists and solo trombone. The trombone's psychological commentary lends an extraordinary strangeness to the piece, interacting and at the same time somehow defining the ritualistic anger of the work as conveyed by the singers. The grandiose (and technically challenging) setting of Edith Södergran's Triumf att finnas till provides a fitting conclusion to this accomplished, varied and magnificently sung collection.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
